Hopefully it goes smoothly. We spent a good year planning/testing for our XP Rollout. Most users didn't even notice the change :(

heh, through group policy i do have it set that the XP boxes have the classic start menu and such so they really don't have much of a difference appearance wise

They just upgraded to xp here at my school's library a week or two ago. About 2/3 of the computers are still using 2k though.

only thing is NO ONE wants to upgrade. the guys who sort the computers out for us are going lock down on our asses. if the program doesnt reside in the C:program files folder, then its no go

that means non of our home brew software will work. also all our stuff gets saved to a server rather than the local machine (atm we have the option to do both) and if we want any software installed then we cant do it.....

but if their gonna implement this, i hope they upgrade the link to the servers which are 150miles away. its only a 512k connection

its basically gonna be you log on and thats it. no custom backgrounds or email sounds or anything like that.

Dude, 80%+ of the computers in my company are still using IBM DOS. The others(if they haven't all been thrown out) are using NT4. Outdated tech FTW. Who cares about better inventory control or being able to look an item up if you don't have it on hand?

well we have shoddy compaq desktops with generic 17inch CRTs that can do 1280x960 @ 60hz (headaches YAY) they have P4 3.0ghz with HT and 512ram with some extreme graphics

and they expect us to run Abaqus 6.6-1 on that!!!! some of the models i load ar 2-3Gb in size! i thought the hdd was gonna die from excessive page file thrashing

I locked people down here at work in a similar way....using DoD standards. Has worked absolute magic keeping the network clean. Bit of a hassle for people at times, but, frankly, they don't have a choice as it isn't going to be any other way as its part of my job to maintain a fast and reliable network.

I have, however, successfully lobbied to keep internet useage unrestricted.

Most of the businesses referenced in this thread SUCK. we've had XP on our desktops since '03, I think. There is talk of upgrading to Vista next year, but I'll be surprised if they move to it that quickly. Fortune 200 company.

We are all XP here, but thats because my company leases the workstations for 3 years. New workstations come in with whatever Dell slaps on them. Servers too are all the latest OS as well.
