Weed killer/fertilizer for grass - when to put it?

Is there a recommended time when to spread weed killer and fertilizer? We usually put it early in the summer or spring, and I'm deciding if I should spread it this weekend or not.

I do see some weeds, not a lot though, and it would help with that, but that alone doesn't make it necessary.

Any thoughts? Should I hold it off for a month?

Usually there are different variations of fertilizer based on the season. As far as when, if you have summer fertilizer, we used to spread the granules before it was supposed to rain so they would dissolve and soak into the grass.

what type of grass/turf do you have, what zone are you located in? There's alot of factors that decide what type of fertizer and what type of application plan to use. I'd go over to gardenweb.com and go under their forums for lawn care. You'll get some great advice there.

What would you do to a yard that has tons of different weeds growing and has never had anything to it as far as I know? I'm in central Illinois if that makes a difference.
