I find it ironic that msn gives away webroot when ms has the best anti-spyware "Windows Defender". Spysweeper 5.x works fine for me in Vista 32. You on 64?

No im on Vista home premium (32) its actually verizon with msn permium so i guess its verzion dsl thats giving me the free webroot. Its actually labeled spysweeper for msn. The build i believe said 5.50. if i were to do a clean install and reinstall the webroot it would run fine for several weeks then after an update i get a compatability error and vista blocks it

Which part of vista blocks Spysweeper? If firewall, you can go to control panel to change it to allowed. I've been using Spysweeper for a few months on XP PRO & now Vista 32 Ultimate. It's 5.5. It's a limited one-year version. If it doesn't work for you, turn on Windows Defender.

I dont know what to do

Turned of defender
allowed the program thru the windows firewall
i brought the regular version from webroot and im not using the msn version

in the system configuration webroot is checked as one of the startup services

after i installed it it needs to reboot. After rebooting i get the blocked startup programs. When i click the run blocked program(spyware client executable nothing happens

I think your spysweeper settings are too strong. I set mine and most every other security tool to a balance between being secure & nag-free. On Shields tab I turn off all but Windows System. No security can fix stupid. I'm careful about what I download.

You don't need 2 antispyware programs. Defender is better than Spysweeper IMO. But mine is free for 1 year. If I pay money for antispyware, I'd buy Superantispyware.

Ok not sure what happened but i did a clean install. Did a couple of updates but not the vista sp1. After i downloaded spysweeper again i turn off everything ie firewall turn off defender. Spysweeper installed and worked. I did the update for vista sp1 and it still is working so far so good. Do you think i should let the webroot firewall duties or let vista firewall handle well the firewall duties ?

I didn't know your webroot comes with Firewall. I was under the impression that you bought only the Spysweeper.

Use only one firewall at a time. IMO, you can get by with Windows Defender & Firewall. If you want a 2nd antispyware, set it up as on demand. Both Defender & Spysweeper can be on demand. On Spysweeper, go to Options, programs, other options.

IMO, Windows Vista Firewall would be better than Webroot's cuz it blocks inbound & outbound and can do group policy & connection profiles. The frontend is in control panel. The advanced one is hidden in Admins Tools.

If I were you, I would use Spysweeper as resident and Defender as on demand, and if possible disable Webroot firewall or remove it from OS and use Vista Firewall instead. If you like pop-ups, there's a free add-on for Vista Firewall.

Basically, every time a program goes online, the Control will pop up and ask you for permission. Works like Zonealarm.
