Wednesday Morning/Afternoon Rant

Maybe it's just me, but waking up at 4am just sucks, no matter how many cups of coffee you have ready and waiting for ya when you finally are alert enough to stumble downstairs to get it. So right off the bat things aren't going towards a super fantastic day.

Lil background, I'm a full time student who works a PT job. Getting my Bachelor of Science in Computer Science...hey AT hobbiest is turning into a career, which is a good thing . My PT job is that I do data entry and basic admin stuff around a small office, hey I know it's not a fun job, but better working at a burger joint and it's paying the bills and my way through school. So the boss guy knows what I'm going to school for so has now put the IT field in my job as well. I get paid $12.50 an hour, he has an IT company who has been dealing with all his IT needs, they charge him $100+ per hour. Fair? Well no, but not going to say anything because most jobs that I would be able to get are right around $8 an hour.

Ok, so present morning. He just bought two new laptops that he wants to start using and wants me to configure them with his network, set up VPN, transfer data and do everything you would need to do to make a new system up and running on a work domain and such. Lets go past the part where I've never done that sorta thing before and I'm kinda winging it. Today he brings me down his laptop and tells me that I had the resolution too high so he had to turn it down a bit so he could see it but he wants me to configure it because things aren't very crisp. I then tell him that laptops, well all LCDs should be ran at their native resolution. He then asks me what this native resolution means and I then explain it to him and tell him that he can change font size and enlarge all that stuff in the display properties. He then tells me that he already did because he lowered his resolution...

At that point I just stopped talking. Take note that I spent a good 5-10 minutes explaining it to him because I wanted to put things very very simple language for him. This kinda crap happens all the time, and I swear I just want to walk out the door every time!

So lemme as you guys this...do you think this happens because...

A.) I'm a college kid

or

B.) I'm a female

OR

c.) He just really needs a swift kick to the head

D.) He is an old-fart who could care less about technology, except that he wants what he wants, and he doesn't care about the details. He sounds like the type I deal with everyday. They don't listen no matter what, they just want to hear that everything they want will be done.

And he knows enough to do things halfway. When he can't finish the task, he hands it off to the OP to "fix" it.

For the OP, it's not because of 1-3. It's because you help him on IT stuff for cheap. He'll keep coming back for more help until you walk out the door. However, you seem to be saying that the pros of the job are better than your other options. The second it isn't, then walk.

It's not a big secret, most people in the FS/T forum already know that I am 😛

So basically I'll be running into this sorta thing from now on...maybe I should invest in some advil stock while I'm at it.

Combination of A, B, and C. This is a no-win situation for you.

That's why I've learned to just keep my mouth closed. This kind of stuff happens at least 3 times a week. Also IT work has now taken over 90% of the time I spend here. Isn't a bad thing, practical real world experience right?

Best experience was when another lady runs over to me and tells me that something is wrong with a PC, the screen is black. I ask her if it's turned on, she then tells me something along these lines...

"Of course it's turned on, I've been running PC's when you were still running around in diapers, it was working fine before you messed with it"

(the mess with it part is that I did de-wormed the entire HD and such, took like 6 hours of run time) So I go over there, and sure enough, the damn PC isn't even turned on. The Monitor "IS" turned on, but now the tower...

PWNT! So . . .what did she have to say?

:camera:'s?

I'm going to go with option C. People really are stupid, but you just have to learn how to suck it up and put a fake smile on your face. Faking politeness to morons is basis of my job and I've gotten quite good at it... Female? Pics.
