Wedding ceremony/reception idea

Yoyoyohowsdajello and I are planning on getting married at some point in the next few years, probably when we're both done with school. Today I came up with an idea that I really like mainly for our wedding reception, and I ran it by him. His response was that we should see what ATOT thinks (but he did think it was a pretty good idea, I think).

Neither Jello nor I are very religious, and I think it would be nice to have a simple wedding at a courthouse, done by a judge, probably on a Friday afternoon. Only our immediate family would attend this, and we could all go out for dinner afterwards. I've never really wanted a big wedding, and I thought this would be a really nice (and inexpensive) alternative.

I was thinking we could have our reception the next day, which would be a Saturday. Jello and I both work at the Milwaukee County Zoo in the summer, and I've seen a lot of parties there and how they turn out. I thought it would be really cool to have a reception at one of the larger gathering places outside (with tents, if it rains). It's called Zoo Terrace and there's a little building with a soda fountain that the zoo fills up before people rent the area out for events, and there's a stage for bands or DJs and there are a lot of picnic tables. We could get tickets for all of our guests to come to the zoo all day (which could be nice, because we'd have a wide variety of age groups in attendance), and then come to the Terrace for food, which could either be catered by an outside company or the zoo or we could cook ourselves. Then we could maybe have a DJ or live band come for during the time we eat and afterwards.

I thought it would be a really cool idea for a non-traditional wedding reception. What do you guys think?

Personally, I don't like it, but that's my preference.

Remember that your wedding & reception are going to be major events in your lives and plan accordingly. If you go for non-traditional, make sure it is not going to cause a regret down the line.

Very true that they are major events... I've heard a lot of good things from people who've done non-traditional weddings (one of my sisters got married in Vegas and then came back and had a reception in their backyard, and everyone really enjoyed it), and heard a lot about the stress of planning a traditional wedding.

I've never really been one for big social events, and I thought that this could be a fun way to celebrate in a less stressful setting.

I agree. It is their wedding, but not my thing.

As far as the non-traditional, judicial ceremony.... i agrre with altonb1 on that too. if you are sure this is what you want, then go for it. VeggieFrog and Neosenate are getting married and when she told me that they would have a civil ceremony, i broke down and cried my eyes out. it is her wedding and she can do whatever she wants, but to me... well, i think that ANY kind of spiritual ceremony would be better that a purely civil one. to me it is like saying that the highest power there is... is the state and a judge. but.. she will do what she wants to do. it seemed there was a misunderstanding, with them both doing what they thought the other wanted, so who knows what their final decision will be.

you can always renew your vows in a more traditional manner later on down the road, but remember... this is the one and only wedding day.

i wish you all the best wishes in your upcoming nuptuials and hope you get exactly the day you want!! :)

As it is YOUR wedding, you should go with YOUR idea.

Personnaly, I think that your idea rocks. And as someone said, it's a once-in-your-lifetime event, so ... don't make it unpersonnaly-conventionnaly-boring.

I love unique ideas like that! there is no "right" or "wrong" with weddings anymore.
Its all about the bride and groom and what they like. When you incorporate something special to your wedding like a place the bride and groom work/volunteer, etc, it makes it more special for the guests.

There are so many cute things that you could do for the party too in the evening under the tent!

CONGRATS!

Thanks for the replies and the congratulations, everyone. We've got awhile before this actually happens, and it's good to hear what other people think of the idea when refining it. :)

How do you feel about Elvis?

He's alright... I'm not a huge fan. Are you suggesting we have an Elvis impersonator? :p

Yeah, instead of a judge and courthouse! Get ELVIS! If you're a trekkie fan, a Picard impersonator would rock too.

I think you should do your wedding on ATOT. Anything else would be wrong.

It would be memorable, I guess... :p

Joking aside, there is always the possibility of getting a close friend ordained by ULC or FSM or one of those other interweb "churchces" and have that person preside over your wedding. Brings a nice personal touch that a judge could never supply.

I'm currently planning a pretty big wedding, it can be stressful, but I've never been one to stress all that much so it doesn't effect me. In a way, it is a rite of passage you know? I never pegged myself as one that would worry about details nor who would do my makeup for the day, but I'm positive we won't have any regrets.

But, I voted that its a good idea. It meets all the requirements I had for mine:
1. Something you both want
2. Something you both like
3. Invites those that are special to you to be a part of the day
4. It is someplace that means something to both of you

Not every wedding is a big production :) And civil doesn't have to mean at the courthouse. But it's what the two of you would like-correction LOVE to look back on.
