Website registration renewal

hey guys. i just received an email for renewing my website with namecheap. i noticed it's cheaper to register than to renew. wondering if i should renew or register after expiry.

is the reason for the renewal being more expensive because they know that if you don't want anyone else taking your URL then you'd be willing to pay extra?

Sure, you can look at it that way, or them taking a loss on the registration in hopes of getting you as a long-term client.

And you know your website will be down for ~40 days while the domain sits in "holding" after it experiences before you have a chance to register it again, right?

your domain will be squatted if you let it expire.
