After 3 short days (and many hours within), the site is finally ready for go-live. It's going to be advertised in the paper today by the holding company.

Anyway, the reason I post this is twofold:

1) just in case any of you NYC people need a new place 🙂

2) would like to hear your opinion on how much you think a small business owner would expect to pay for a site similar to this, of similar presentation and content/structure.

Thanks for looking ..

Sorry, I gave you my 3 seconds of time but all i saw was "loading" so i closed it.

Ok, seriously, Its a nice looking site, I do say it took a little long for me to load (maybe just preload the first few images, not all of them?)

If I designed that for a client, I would charge no more then a couple hundred dollars, there isnt much to it (from what i saw). But, make sure they are aware if people do not have flash, they will see nothing. My clients are mostly lawyers, and i've learned that at large firms the IT departments do not allow flash to be installed.

Took too long to load, not everyone has broadband. Some may lose patience and leave. Also must consider the computer illiterate masses who do not know aobut flash and will need to go download it ino rder to view the site.

If anything I would give the viewers an option for flash and non-flash sites. Other than that it looks great!

true...which also doubles the work. I didn't understand the purpose of having a clickable map that links to yahoo maps. I would've charged $500 for it.

Thanks for the responses...

I did it as a lump sum deal and the thing took 20+ hours to create because of a lot of scripting, timeline (in Flash) considerations, and photoshop re-work. I wound up working for less than I'd like. :| It doesn't look like a lot (that's why I estimated so little) but ugh Flash is time consuming. But in the end it's a good feeling to see all that work complete.

The colors (which are too toned down for me) and flash weren't my choice. They wanted it. Preloading the first few images only is a good idea - if they want me to work on it more for $, I'll do it.

I also agree about the choice of flash and load time - target audience is likely not going to have broadband - especially people who would be interested in this stuff - but again, they wanted it.

About the Yahoo map link - it's consolation for ripping off the Yahoo text off the image - they wanted it that way too. I'm surprised I was allowed to even use my own PC. 😉

You need a bypass link to an HTML site (non-flash) at the very beginning. If the owners balk, then tell them that they would not be Section 508 (oops) compliant without it (handicapped and accessibility government standard). Denying the handicapped is a terrible thing these days (and denying you more money.)
😉

EDIT: Btw, I want apartment 1B!

I agree that there ought to be a non-Flash version. Also, the fact that the translucent navigation box overlaps the photos in the Views section is annoying. Otherwise, looks good.

Pretty picky customers...I guess that makes your job a little easier in that you have the colors chosen for you. I'm in the process of learning Flash and making an intro page that leads into the main page.

in NYC you can charge much more than 500 bucks for a flash site

ps: this one is way tooo heavy to load though

While I didn't find it very annoying, I noticed it too.

I can very simply overlap it on top of the overlay. But is that what they want ? 😀

Use scenes, my friend... goes from one scene to the next so you can keep your timelines straight.

I think if you played with the resolution properties of the images, you could get a lot better loading times. I had huge pictures that I put into my flash and it was only 3 pictures but it made my movie 3 megs. I played around with the properties to lower it and it went down to about 100k. Flash doesn't automatically resize your pictures to lower res when you resize them for animation, you have to do it to the real picture in your file library.

I am on broadband and it still took a few seconds to load, which is very long. It looks nice, except for the colors as mentioned before. Also there really isn't an "intro" so I'd say speed up that animation to get to the regular page faster. Overall a nice job tho.

I converted all the imported bitmaps (jpg) to symbols right away and that's what was used. The publish settings compression set at 70% should work on them, no ? Each of those pics should be no bigger than 20k each before import, I made sure of that. I figured flash compression I just mentioned would do the rest.
