Website Bandwidth Question...

HI, I was wondering if you guys can help me and a friend. I'm helping a friend choose a website host to set up a website about his new resturant. I was just wondering how much bandwidth should he get? We're deciding between 10-30, not sure how much traffic the site will generate, we obviously want alot, but just w/ start up we're not sure.

Thanks for any help or suggestions
 
I would start low (I'm assuming you mean 10 Gigs / month ) and then after you start building an audience, you can scale your bandwidth up as needed. There won't be very much initial demand so there's no point in spending lots on bandwidth.

Thanks, that what i'm thinking also. But off of two diff hosting sites that we're interested in, one has the lowest of 30g, and it can be upgraded to 90g, while the other w/ the lowest of 10 that can be upgraded only 20g, and the 20g is about the same price as the 30g off of the other site.

I'm thinking of just going for the 30g, just because of the better possibility of upgrades.

I'd probably go for the 30 as well if it's cheaper per GB and the price difference isn't too large. Also, if the only possibility is 10g more per month on the one server, that doesn't leave a whole lot of room for scalability. 90g is just crazy, but it's nice knowing you have the option 🙂

You do realize that with dathorn.com webhosting you can split up the resources (webspace/bandwidth) between multiple websites, right?

Really? wow, I did not know that, Domain i'm currently looking for, i figure pick the hardest thing first, what suggestions do you have?

I don't see any restaurant drawing even 10GB/month in traffic (unless it's a website for Denny's or some other large chain). People are going to go to the rwebsite to look at the menu, hours, and to find directions to the place whenthey're thinking about eating there. I really don't think a site for a restaurant will do more than a couple gigs/month in transfer.
 
As for domain registrar service I would highly recommend NameCheap.com or GoDaddy.com, you can't go wrong with either choice.

First I would suggest registering a main top level domain, not the restaurant name but something along the line of services ... like thaoservices.com or thaoonline.com or hongonline.com or whatever. This would be your MAIN domain which comes with it's own ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com name servers (to project a nice professional image).

Then you login to your main domain and create a hosting account for the restaurant.

I agree with Tyler, a restaurants website will not use 10GB bandwidth, maybe not even 2GB (unless you get a GLOWING review on the front page of the LA Times newspaper).

The website will probably have:
Pictures of the inside/outside
Directions with map
Menu
Address, phone and hours

That's it. 2GB of bandwidth tops.

But you could use the other 28GB bandwidth to host a few dozen other websites 🙂

So first I would go to NameCheap.com and register a general sort of name, then sign up for dathorn.com webhosting (which should be sold out yet again really soon), then send me a PM and I'll walk you through the rest of the process.

He could, but most restaurant owners I've met haven't been particularly interested in starting web hosting companies on the side 😛
 
Thanks for all your help suggestions! I'm not interested in making websites for a living, but i do have a friend who has an online porfolio, I think i can find ways to split up those 30gigs of bandwidth between me and my friends, and have fun with it.
 
You don't HAVE to become a web hosting company, that's not what I was trying to convey.

Just get a main domain, sign up for dathorn, you'll have 30GB to use how you please. If you want you could just host the restaurant and your friend's portfolio. Sure there will be about 20GB/mo going to waste but that's your choice.
 
30-90G for a restaurant??
unless its mcdonalds, or something real special

If its the avg restaurant type thing I'm thinking about here, I doubt you'd hit more than 1g for the first year, if ever...

For that kinda of hosting, you could probaly find someone to split up their hosting to you.
Heck, if you know you dont want more than about 1g / month I could even do it for you.

🙂 I think me and my friends can find good use of those 20 gigs, for all your suggestions I think I'm, gonna split it up, 2 for the resturant, about 10 for my friends portofolio, and 18g for diff peoples personal websites, ebay pics and just stuff online.

With your WHM you can create as many webhosting accounts as you want, $13.50 gets you a whole lot 2GB/30GB and you can split it however you like.
