Damn F#%&*@(% program! I've seen TWO NT installation that Webshots has been alone for completely destroying in the past three weeks. I just got finished with a four hour diagnosis of an NT box that was getting stack overflows and overall not being very responsive. He said it started Saturday, and the only change he made directly around that time was an installation of webshots! Now he's getting stack overflows in basic Windows components, like rpcss.exe, and overall now has a system that is unusable. Guess what I'll be doing tomorrow now? Spending all damn morning reinstalling NT and I will get bitched at.

We EXPRESSLY state that programs like AMS Weatherbug, Webshots, and other "nifty" tools cause MAJOR system problems under certain circumstances! Do they listen to us? nooooooooooooooooo. Who do they bitch at when their system no longer works? The IT guys. Like we didn't warn them every week for the past 3 years that Internet shareware/freeware causes stuff to blow up.

we had that same problem at work... people don't listen, then they get pissed cause it doesn't work. go figure. so basically we say if you can't control your computer usage, then we'll control it for you.

I haven't seen this under NT5 but I assume poorly written software would tank ANY OS under the right circumstances.

Coicidence or not, it just tanked a Win2K box with the exact same symptoms as NT4s.

It must be the new version of Webshots.

Same thing here on Webshots, only I had it bomb ATI video drivers and had to reinstall those in win98.

<< What is it with simple-minded users that prevents them from understanding that free programs aren't written well? >>

Uhm, you mean free programs like Linux, Samba and Apache?

I think that the word you're looking for is 'majority'. '...that the majority of free programs aren't written well?' :)

These users wouldn't touch linux or apache with a ten foot cattle prod.

The free programs they would download aren't written well, I should say.

when I install something, at the first major change in behavior, it's gone. The first it crashs or I have something behave strangly it's removed

Have the same problem here at work...
We have had to institute a policy of no software installs/downloads without approval.

4 hrs. reinstalling NT? I take it your company doesn't create ghost images for each department?
(saves us mucho time) :)

cheers,
Gabe

Weatherbug? Really? I've been using it for a good 7 or 8 months now and have NEVER had it crash on me. My system runs fine with it. Am I just lucky?

Weatherbug hasn't given us any problems YET. But chances are it will, sometime now or in the future. I just quoted it because a lot of users have downloaded it when they really don't need to.

I don't see how you can create ghosts when the hardware is different. I can't imagine a ghost of a Celeron 466 with NT having hardware detected for that mobo and system being usable on a Dimension 4100 with a 1 GHz P3.

Ghost is great, saves me lots of time too.

At least they are installing free programs. I have a lot of problems with people installing unlicensed "not-free" stuff. Then expecting me to support it. I uninstall it when they ask for help and it really pi$$es them off. :)

One lady couldn't figure out why her crappy old computer (With a small hard drive) kept locking up. She called and I finally saw that she had 5MB free and no room for the good old swap file. She had install Word Perfect and used up all of her HD space. Morons.

You can't unless you want to reinstall all of the drivers after you image the new computer, which would be pointless.

Anyone know what port weatherbug uses so you could possibly block it at the firewall?

I wish I knew. I suppose you could launch netstat, open weatherbug, and catch it that way.
