Dreamweaver... even the pros use it. At the risk of sounding too general... its all-around practicality is unmatched.

For the "I use notepad" freaks... they have a code-only view as well... it's not just a WYSIWYG editor. It's the other facets like color-coding, extended find/replace, and direct-ftp file editing that make it so powerful.

I tried NVu, and liked it at first, but it really mungs up your HTML. Probably the worst I have seen, and none of them are much good.

You might want to try WebMatrix, which is a free visual web app development tool from Microsoft.

I stand by Dreamweaver only becuase I was a notepad(++) freak until I figured out how to setup Dreamweaver properly (or at least to do things the way I did them).

Dreamweaver is an excellent program for the beginner all the way up the advanced web designer....

I use TopStyle, which is made by the same guy who did HomeSite, which was bought by Macromedia to use as their code editor for DW.

Dreamweaver user here and I consider myself a fairly experienced web developer.

FrontPage isn't bad for getting a site up right away. It's really easy to learn and you can easily apply themes. There are also many FrontPage components you can drop in as well to get some nice little addins on your site. However, if you really want to control the actual code FP is terrible at mucking it up. It also doesn't scale to very large web sites.

Are you sure they didn't use ColdFusion Studio as the model ?

Well, maybe they did, but they might have based CF Studio off Home Site too. :) Homesite used to come with Dreamweaver as a separate code editor, but now it seems to be built in.
