I have used just about all the major services out there, at one time I had something like 30 webmail accounts, and Gmail blows them all away.
Having said that, I doubt it will stay free with POP service. I expect that in the next year or so Google will start to charge to a 'premium' service, but I guess it matters on how much money they see from advertisers.

GMail has 2.5GB storage, really awesome UI (IMO), and you can even access it with your fav mail program.

I also have an old old old hotmail acct for spam collection 😀

my preferred email account is on hotmail. when i say "preferred," it's not the one i want to use most often, but it's the one that's tied up to most of my other accounts (billing, ebay, newegg, amazon, blahblah) and i don't want to go through the trouble changing my email address.

gmail was something i used VERY often when at my old job (conversations back and forth with other bored workers across the country), but then it just lost its appeal for me. i don't really keep in touch with the guy i used to communicate with on gmail, and now i have IM at my new job, so i don't need it.

i use my yahoo address for sweepstakes. it gets the most spam in the world.

i know my priorities aren't in order in terms of email, but it all really ties into the fact that i signed up for hotmail first, then yahoo, and finally, gmail.
