Perhaps i am doing something wrong, but in mozilla and thunderbird I can only figure out how to set up pop and imap. I do not see where to set them up to check webmail.

Zing, only Outlook can do that.

In the browser portion of Mozilla.

cute, i know how to check them at hotmail.com
perhaps i didn't do a sufficient job of making myself clear.
I am looking for an applcation that can:
1) download e-mail from several pop3 accounts
2) download mail from several http mail servers (suck as hotmail/msn) simultaniously
in windows an example program would be outlook express, it will download your pop3 mail and http mail as long as you give it the correct server addresses and login information.i

You made a mistake by using a Microsoft service, that's all. :(

They specificly have it set up so that you can only use Outlook or Outlook Express as far as I can tell. There is no alternative client that is allowed to work with it, at least for any Linux stuff.

There is a perl program called 'Gotmail' (freshmeat.net is usefull for finding all sorts of Linux programs) that will download your emails for you, but that is about it.

Probably your best bet would be to get a different email service for whatever you use hotmail for that supports standards properly. Then just use Gotmail to get mail for you so you don't miss out on any emails from old friends or whatnot that don't know your new email address yet.

Actually, i do know that the protocol hotmail uses, usually called httpmail, is nothing more than a set of http/1.1 extensions generally called WebDev.. so it is not propriatery, it just seems to be that no one else supports it.
I was hoping that someone knew a program for linux that does. Unfortunately for me, I have little choice but to use the msn/hotmail servers, as i do tech support for msn.... it sucks but it is a job..... and i sometimes need to see what is in my 2 mailboxes before i go into work. I just didn't want to take the time to log into hotmail 2 times each morning.....

I was looking for a way to check hotmail a while ago and I found a ton of progs that would check hotmail via http and then turn around and act as a pop or imap server for your regular email client. I'm not sure if there are any good free ones and I doubt they'd run on linux but, if you have a windows box that you could use as a sort of proxy server you could try doing it that way.

You can probably get by using one of the following:

apt-cache search hotmail
gotmail - utility to download email from a Hotmail or MSN account
hotsmtp - smtp to Hotmail (HTTPmail) gateway
hotway - pop3 to Hotmail (HTTPmail) gateway
