I want to buy 2 webcams to keep to do live video chat with my wife and son in the hospital 200 miles away. I have a pc(P2 400 &512 mb ram) at home and DSL, my wife will have a laptop(266 P2& 296mb ram) and 56k modem at the hospital. What webcams would produse the best(speed and quality). Will I be able to really talk and see her live since the hospital on has a 56k line? I would be greatful for any help.

Thanks🙂

I've heard good things about Logitech cams. I wouldn't expect the greatest quality through a 56k, but I think it would probably be ok. Also, try searching the forums for "webcam", I bet a ton of stuff will turn up.

Hope your wife and/or son are doing ok 🙂

Also, look for what kind of sensor they use. Cheaper cams usually use CMOS sensors, which is good for normal lighting but gets really grainy under low light. Web cams with CCD sensors are more expensive but they generally have higher image quality and is a lot better under low light conditions. I think the Logitech Pro series have CCD sensors. There also some webcams that use faster USB 2.0 and Firewire such as the ADS Pyro and OrangeMicro's iBOT. Images are smoother because of the higher interface speed so video is not compressed.

Have you thought about getting a camcorder, and using it as a cam? Odds are with a new baby, you are going to want one anyway.
