She likes to use AIM (I know, I know, but what's a Dad to do???)

I need a decent webcam so we can video chat online. What makes a decent webcam and does anyone have recommendations/personal experience?

We are both on broadband cable internet.

I was in the same situation ... looking for a great web-cam to talk to my parents. Logitech Quick Cam PRO seems to be the most recommended one (costs anything beween 45 to 99 .. check ebay).

However, I decided not to by it as I discovered that there is no better webcam than your much more expensive digital camcorder. If you have a firewire/usb digital camcorder, you can just use a free utiliy like trackercam .. and you are good to go ...

hi,

the most important thing you have to look for is that the cam has a CCD sensor instead of a CMOS sensor.

The cheap cams (and yes, you can get cams for $20 already) almost ALL have CMOS sensors (BAD)...means they are very slow, have grainy pictures...and indoor/low-light capabilities are horrible. (indoors will be very dark and grainy if you dont shine a light in the face :)

Logitech Quickcam Pro..Creative Webcam Pro eX look good...etc...otherwise i recommend looking around and reading some opinions too...stay away from noname grocery store deals...more pain in the a$$ than joy....

I agree with the Quickcam Pro recommendation; however, I use my Sony camcorder hooked up w/ Firewire and the picture is absolutely amazing. Nothing beats it...of course it does cost just a tid bit more. ;)
