Web site Certificate and Vista question

For my work, in order for me to access their network from home through the internet i have to download a certificate for my computer. With Xp i have had no problem. Today i thought i would try on my vista system.

To get the certificate i have to enter some personal information and then it gets to a point where it says "Downloading ActiveX control...." on the center of my screen and it just stays at that point.

The message on the screen just stays there and i cannot continue....

I called the tech people at work and they said that it's because of Vista that i can't get the certificate. I wonder if someone here knows what part of vista may be blocking the ActiveX control from downloading.

Here is a link to what the message on the screen looks like.

I'm also using norton 360 but i disabled it's browser helpers and the problem persists. So either i can't get the activex control from work or vista is blocking it from running. But i don't know where to look in vista to let it run except in the securing settings in the browser and i played with them without any luck.

Any ideas?

Is your browser popping a bar at the top that required input before it will download?

If it's a personal cert or computer cert for you then they need to fix their website. The default out-of-the-box cert website on Windows certificate servers is working fine with Vista and no Vista-specific changes were made for this to happen. There isn't much special about it so this process can certainly work.

If it's a root cert you need to trust he could have just emailed the thing to you. Probably not the case.

There isn't a pop up on the top of the browser, just the image that I linked to. It's as if it's trying to download the certificate but can't.

I don't know the difference between the different types of certificates but on my XP machine the certificate is in the personal folder so i guess it's a personal certificate.

I tried again to see the difference between doing this on my XP machine versus the vista machine. On the xp machine when the image that i linked to shows up i get the browser bar at the top alert about requiring the input. On the vista machine that doesn't happen. So something is stopping the process before the browser gets to do the bar thing.

I've changed the security settings for the site and none of them seem to matter. Is there anyther setting in vista that i need to change. Or is the problem at the other end on the website that i'm connecting to?

Er, no it isn't.

The current version Certsrv doesn't work with Vista and will never work with Vista. It require Xenroll, which was deprecated. The Certsrv in Longhorn will/does work.

I'm not sure what this means, but is this a problem at the other end and there is nothing i can do to my machine to accept the activex control?

You will never get that page to work on Vista, and there is nothing you can do on your end to fix it. Your IT people are going to have to get you that cert through some other means (assuming they are supporting Vista).

Yeah, it is less than pretty. But hey, at least we put a friendly message in 2003 SP2 that will tell you it won't work 🙂

Or you could use the Longhorn beta certenroll pages on 2003.
