Web Noob - Front Page Extensions

Can someone explain this in simple terms? I have a domain hosted by 1and1.com and they give you the option to enable front page extensions. If enabled, would this allow me to create my own page design/template in MS frontpage then FTP it to their servers isntead of having to use their website creator??? Because that's what I'd like to be able to do... (not that I have anything against their website creator, they have some very nice templates!). Is that what that option does...or am I way off...?

I believe it allows you to BYPASS having to use FTP and does it from within FrontPage itself? Not sure.

Anyway...wtf are you using FrontPage for?? BLECH!!

First rule of making website, don't use the FrontPage templates.

Just save the template as a web page (.html), and FTP it to your webserver. That is all, no need to mess with those extensions.

Because i'm a website noob with no web developping talent whatsoever...
😀

Does 1and1 even allow what I'm trying to accomplish or no...?😕

Not familiar with them. But, I'm sure you could email their support dept. 🙂

Their tech support still has not got back to my last email I sent them 3 weeks ago...🙁

So I decided to come here... 🙂

What other apps do you guys recommend rather than Front Page for a web noob...?

Open FrontPage 2000
Open the web site you want to publish.
In the "Specify the location to publish your web to" box, type the location of an HTTP Web server: (for example, http://www.your.domain.com), or click the arrow to select a location to which you have published before
A dialog box appears asking for your username and password. Enter them.
Click "Publish"

FrontPage Extensions allows you to update your domain with changes that you make to your saved material via FrontPage. FP is smart enough to know what all to upload if you make certain changes so that the changes all roll out on your domain as well --instead of having to remember out which pages of your site that you changed. FP connects to the domain and uploads the new versions of whatever pages you edited, all automatically. It's really kinda simple, but FP adds way too much bloat to your code. If you're interested in web page design, first learn a simple language like HTML. There are books out there (HTML For Dummies, etc) that teach you everything that you need to know to get started. That's the first step. The second step is looking around on the web at many popular sites to see how their layout compares to other popular sites and what you like best. Next, try duplucating a layout that you like best, or one that fits your site's content best. Yeah, that's right, content. You have to have something to keep our interest. 😛

3 weeks??

Ouch!

Glad I decided not to take part in that 'free for 3 years' offer. That's what I was afraid of...they'd get inundated.

So putting aside the fact that FP sucks... 🙂

So basically what your saying is, if I enable front page extensions for my domain I SHOULD be able to just use the built in publishing feature to transfer my pages, and I'll be able to design my own page that way...correct?

Yes, you'll be able to automatically update your site through FP if you enable FP Extensions on your webhost. Whether you actually design something or not is another issue. 😉

Not necessarily. You're not going to get anywhere near an award winning website on your first try, but if you work on it enough, you won't have the worst website either. Forget all the frizzle and dazzle. Try for something 100% functional and go from there.
