Web links to word documents not opening properly?

When I click on a web link to a word document, it tries to open the doc(IE6) but usually just opens up a blank window document. I know the document is there cause when I right click and save as to my harddrive and open it, the document opens fine. But I'd like to not have to save everything to my harddrive first. Does anyone know how to fix this. Thanks!
