Im throwing together a small personal web site, and am looking for a good web host. i really just need a small package, but one that offers domain name registration. i have found lots of companies on the web, but was wondering if anyone has any recommendations, or knows of any companies i should stay away from. thanks in advance for the help

GotoEcom.com offers a free package. you only pay $10 for a startup charge, and i believe $15 US to get the domain registered. if you don't care about getting a personal domain, try getting one from cjb or something similar, for free.

good luck.

I am in the same boat you are. I have been attempting to host my site on my DSL and Cable connections over the years. Recently saw a post about RippleHost. For $5/YEAR, I figured it wouldn't be that much of a loss if the service sucked.

So far, I have my personal site up there. I have 20 megs of images in galleries from trips. I have pulled alot of traffic (for me) and really only have used around 100 meg of bandwidth so far this month. You can check out the speed of the site in my Sig.

I am so happy, i have bought a (cheap)present for a friend. He has never had a domain or website, so I bought him one. :)

Can't really take too much credit for the total design, I used a built in template with Coffee Cup HTML editor and just played with the layout a bit to get it where I like it. Then as for the News updates, I use blogger.com.

Cool thing about it is that you can make blog posts from any computer with internet access and I have a little hot link URL that i can click in IE that will make a blog post about the site I am looking at.

With blogger, all you need to do is put a little a few html tags in your page and it picks up where the tags are and inserts the post how you lay it out. Plus you can add people who can make posts on your site too. It was my cheap way of doing a blog page without delving headlong into learing PHP or Perl. :D

Hell, I am still learning CSS... :)

Since we finally made contact with each other on ICQ, here's what I would recommend for your situation:

1) Register a domain through NameCheap.com for $8.88/yr

2) Obtain webhosting from either

Which is better? They're both budget hosts, you get what you pay for.

So you can have your own www.website.com for under $20/yr, not bad :p
