So, a family member wants me to build a site for them (actually their business) and pay me for it. I offered to do it for free, but they wanted to pay me due to business expense and all that. They also demanded that they pay me the standard fee out there these days. Its a standard site and should be next to simple work.

So... I've never charged anyone - always only did it for myself or for friends. What do web developers charge these days?

Thanks, but I've worked for this family business before. And actually..your saying would be better if it was Oil and Oxygen. They explode.

Rather than posting here where you will get varied rates based on different locations, why not call up a couple of local companies who offer web design services and ask them what they charge? Might give you a more realistic picture of the "standard fee".

I would go for $25/hr in this case... but even better is the $500 flat fee since they don't give @ sh!t.
