i was asked to design a website for Wishek Steel (from what i understand they manufacture the worlds largest/heaviest cultivating disc (read; farm implement)) of course, my uncle happens to be a part owner of the company, this also happens to be the first site i will be making that i will actually be getting paid for :p

i've already gone over hosting and domain registration with him, along with the information that i would need to design the site, the only thing that i am stumped on is how much i should be charging for inital setup, then the monthly updates.

http://www.summersmfg.com/
that is what they have been looking at, very simple, ect. and summers mfg. is about about the same size as them. of course it would look a lot better than that site :p but i figure it would take me about 3-4 weeks to get it up and running properly, and then small month updates.

what would you guys charge? keep in mind this is a family memeber, he did say that he would pay me, but i don't want to look like a jacka$$ and tell him some absurd price.

thanks much

edit; 3-4 weeks because i am a full time student that already has a part time job :)

Hmm... family member that said he'd "pay" you. Well considering that, I wouldn't do it for much at all. As far as updates, does that encompass more than textual changes or is it design mods ? Adding pages ?

In situations where you are family, it's a smarter move to stay away from being "tied" to this project after you complete it initially. Teach them to update it themselves if they are even remotely able. Otherwise it'll eventually become a hassle as you don't want to continuously ask family for money.

As far as charging them, I'd say the cost of the hosting/domain plus $50 one-time. The rest of the stuff should be no more than a handful of hours on a weekend as far as I can see. Maybe another $50 if you're not really feeling giving.

On the commercial market, hosting/domain charges plus about $500 (as a professional, not a work-at-home freelancer).

If it wasn't family, about $50 an hour.
You decide how much family discount is.

Is it going to be database driven or just static ?
If database driven, I'd build them an interface for making changes.
Of course, this would be more difficult if it is being hosted remotely instead of on their own web server.
