Web designers: Do layout designs just come to your mind?

I'm having hard time creating something. I guess it's because I've been a novice all this time and I'm trying things that are over my head. I guess you could describe it as a white belt going into a fight against a black belt because he wants to prove something. That's a sh!tty analogy but you get the picture.

I just go with something simple.

Depending on what content you plan to put up there, the design must reflect on showing the content as best as possible while leaving the user free to navigate and view the site easily IMO.

BTW, I am sick and tired of flash pages with techno designs. I think that is old hat.

The best designs are clean, and easy to navigate. Most designs I do, I'll start of with a rough colour scheme I want, toy around with some drawings, look around for some inspiration (careful here....not copying!), and it'll just click. I'm always highly critical of my own work anyway so I'll toy around with quite a few before I decide on the best looking one. Once it's drawn/coded, I'll normally tweak it a little, bit of css effects etc.

I guess so... I'm not a professional designer, but people like my marijuana project and I spent no time at all designing it. I just made the whole thing white, made the buttons black (with CSS), spaced the characters on the fly, etc. I design in Dreamweaver, because it's not a big deal to me.

Since I primarily design sites for other I let them give me examples of what they want. I then improve their layout for content and navigation.

One thing that bothers me is an intro or home page that has little to no content.

I don't do much web design anymore...but I used to as a part time job in college. While there are a few times where the design "just came to me"...usually I would just start with some basic ideas and start playing around with shapes and such. After working on it for an extended period of time, things would just kind of morph until I would finally decide that I was happy with what I did.

Start with a color scheme and then a simple layout. The framework should include the navigation system, and the where content goes. I'll usually then spend a couple days working on graphics to implement the framework.

Many ideas come from improving exisiting pages or altering them to meet your needs. Obviously you can't copy thier graphics and stuff, but general layout and navigation ideas can be copied and redone for your needs.
