web design rates?

Ever since I started working at this new job (building websites) I've had more and more people as me for web design. Of course each of them want to know what I charge. I know it all depends on the website and what goes into it, so I was thinking of doing what most people do and charge on an hourly basis. What's a good rate though? Any links to places that "standardize" these types of things (I highly doubt it but I'm asking anyway)?

Also, what about charging per page, minimum downpayments, flat rates, etc? Any ideas? Any web design firm people here?

Not sure about here, but on many web design boards this is considered price fixing and will get you banned (just letting you know).

A good place to start is $20 an hour, this might be a little low, but it really depends how much money the potential client has. Can't really go into detial on a public forum. :)

Also, deffinity charge per hour. Otherwise you'll end up getting ripped off by yourself some time if it ends up being a lot more work.

Good practice to quote expected hours ahead of time, and stick to it. If you go over, you don't screw the customer. If you come in under, it's a bonus for you.

Wow, didn't think it was that big of a deal. Just trying to see what people charge. I've seen $50/hour but I've also seen $150/hour and I really don't know why one place is charging more than the other. Perhaps more experience? Can you PM me with more info?

might get you banned from some boards (certainly not this one), but that would be an extremely liberal definition of price fixing.
