Ok, I got the buttons on this site off the web. They look like crap. Really jaggy. How do I clean them up??

I've never used PS before, so really specific instructions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

amish

Just bevel it and use as close a background as possible to the one you are going to put them over.

the fonts need a bit anti alaiasing.. you could try adding the feather filter on them.

I'm not at home, so I am going by memory. It's on one of the pull down menus. I thinks it's Layers -> Effects -> Bevel & Emboss.

If you have PS6 I know it can now do vector based drawing, which won't pixellate images.

amish, i'd suggest you do something like using a buttonmaker program and make your own buttons. Ulead has two i can think of right off. Ulead Cool 3D and Ulead Photo Impact 6. both are easy programs to learn and both allow you to make buttons easily. the trial programs are available for d/l at the ulead site.

photo impact 6 has a great bottonmaker wizard that has hundreds of buttons that can be modified in thousands of ways.

to explain how to do what you want in ps would take too long although it is fairly simple to clean those really terrible buttons up. i also suggest that if you plan to continue with developing web pages, you really should learn adobe photoshop or jasc paintshop pro or corel photopaint. learning one of these will be an indispensible tool. btw, ulead's photo impact has much of what these programs have to offer but may be easier for you to learn.

for other buttonmaker programs just do some searches at your fav download place.

I suggest you actually go out and *buy* photoshop, and read the manual. It's kind of hard to learn it when you have a borrowed copy ...

Make sure you got them off a website that gives them for free, as opposed to simply ripping them from some random website.

Yeah, I've been playing with Photoimpact 6.

When i use the button maker, the pics still come out pixelated...

Ok, i know this is silly but is your canvass view set at 100% or "Actual Size"?

You won't believe how many people actually fail to set their view at actual or 100%. A lot of times this is a cause of frustration when thinking "why is this image so pixelated?"

Just a thought :)

They are pixelated on the website, not just in the editor.

I'm using the demo.

I actually like the Ulead Photoimpact 6 better. :)

e-amish, seems the button itself is good... though i do see a hint of jaggedness. I think what makes it look worse is how the fonts used aren't anti-aliased

another issue i see here is that some graphic editors when exporting a transparent gif must have a background color set within the canvass similar (or close) to the background color used on the page it's going on.
