web cam advice for setup.

Laptop has built in web cam. Utility provided allows verification of working; able to view my ugly mug on screen.

What I would like to do is set it up so wife can video chat with grandkids.

MS has Windows live which seems to require jump through registration hoops.

What do I need to get?
Will the others require installing the same interface or are standards now in effect to perform live vide/audio support?
