I need to install surveillance cameras that would have the ability to be monitored locally as well as remotely. I couldn't find much good info on it on google. What I did find is that basically I have 2 options as for the type of system to use. One is to build a computer and buy a pci card made by a company name geovision(there might be others as well). I'm leaning towards this because I would be able to use that computer to run a web site too(it would be very lightly used) and it appears to be a much cheaper option. The other option is to buy a stand alone unit that is basically plug and play. It's essentially a PC, with a modified OS and stuff so the only thing it can be used for is surveillance, just plug in the cameras, hook up a net connection, and it's ready to go. That's good and all, but it can't be used for anything else, and it would cost about $1000 more.
So I was just wondering if anyone here has had any experience with this type of stuff, and has any advice on what to do, and what names I should go with.
