To convert say an Openoffice.org file to a word doc. You specify the file to be converted, tell it to convert the file to a .doc, enter in your email address, and hit convert. It converts the file to .doc, then sends it to your email. Pretty handy tool, actually.

yep, what jimbob200521 and lokiju said... plus two huge bonuses:

1) it's FREE: no shareware time trial hassles or developer-needs-to-feed-his-family guilt trips to bother with;

2) it's 100% PLATFORM-INDEPENDENT: whereas most conversion tools are made for one platform (or require compilation and/or porting from source if not), this is a web tool, so you could be running any obscure OS of your choosing as long as its browser can render the page properly.

The secret is to not send ALL your documents there. Just the ones you want converted. It's in the fine print.

Storage of User Files
When users upload files to be converted Zamzar stores those files on its servers until such time as those files have been converted to the new file format. As soon as this has been done Zamzar removes the original user files from its servers. The converted files remain in place on the servers for users to download, until such time as they expire, at which point they are deleted. Files stored for download are only accessible by Zamzar and through the clickable link generated for download.
