Weather forecast: Smoke

Don't see this every day
See?
Reason why

The past 2 days I've woken up and smelled smoke in my room. Like, really strong smoke, almost as though I was camping and there was a fire right outside my tent. Funny thing is I'm about a 20 minute drive away from this fire. When you're up a bit at night you can see the entire thing glowing. Kinda freaky.

I understand forest fires...but bog fires? Fires...in the WETlands? Don'tcha get a lot of rain too? How did the fire start?

It's been dry lately, and the bog is pure peat which is full of methane. These fires can burn underground for months.

Wuss. Last year we had a 700,000 acre fire 40 miles from town. You couldn't see across the street. The NWS particulate meter was pegged for two months straight. Some days the meter at UAF was pegged (1200+ micrograms/cubic meter). Try that on for size.
