I want to try out the Faux Hawk because I'm getting bored with my current hairstyle. My hair is just cut short on the top and trimmed on the sides.

I tried gelling up a faux hawk, but I couldn't get just the center to stand up by itself. So my question is, is the hair on the top sides shorter than the hair in the top center for a faux hawk?

PSA: Do not do a google image search for "gay hair pictures". Even with safe search turned on I saw many peni and one goatse. 🙁
 
Have your hair 'texturized' when you get it cut (they take a hand razor and shave a bit by hand or use special scissors) it makes your hair always appear seperated and messy even when it isn't.

I don't wear one, just passing on some 411.

Does that work for longer hair (a bit past the ear) too?

Thanks I never knew they had this. That's I i originally wore my hair, I'd just run my hands through it making a random pattern. It looks pretty good, but once my hair got long, it looked bad. When my hair gets log and I don't get it at all, it looks too neat and plain.

That's a good question, I'm not sure. I keep my hair relatively short and have this done every now and then just to thin out my hair cause it's so damn thick.
 
Can I thread jack for a second:

Where can I find some longer hair styles for men like down to the collar bone? I want to grow my hair out i think.
 
Depends. There are many styles of Faux Hawk. I have my hair cut in a fade style, longer on top. I have them texturize it with their razor scissors and I use hair glue and wax to keep it up in the middle. When it grows longer, I flatten the sides against my head and make it a messy faux hawk. My hair is completely straight so it does whatever I want it to do.

Any place that I've ever been does it with no problem save for like, an old school barber shop.

Anyone can do it. It's easy.

I have one. I just have them cut it a little longer than finger-length on top, 3-blade on the sides, and fade it up. I throw some gel in, mess it up so that my hair on top is pretty much standing straight up, and then I just push it down on the sides and in back. Done. Some call it metro, but I'm about as far from metro as you can get. I'm just starting to lose my hair and wanted something easy to use. This works for me.
