That's what I was thinking, but there's another subcategory of person that wears it outside. Those are the ones that got the Jesus lobotomy. They have that vacant, dim kind of smile, and appear as though they took acid a few times more than they should have. They use the cross as a replacement for a standard tie.

As a lifelong Catholic I have owned at least one cross and wore it for about a few weeks when I was 12. I just could not get used to the cold metal on my chest. So I wore it on the outside and one day while horse playing someone ripped the chain and that was the end of it.

I had the same experience getting used to my dog tags in the Army. When you are doing PT they pop in and out of your shirt.
