I know this movie is out now (we were soldiers once) but I haven't seen it yet.
Instead I bought the book a few days ago.

Incredible read!

I highly recommend that those interested in the "war" in Viet Nam read this!

Having read the book, I was dissappointed after seeing the movie. A very good book. I think I'll have to head over to Half.com and pick up a copy.

The movie stays really well to the book until the last 20 minutes of the movie. The movie paints the picture that both sides pulled out when the 1st Battallion (Mel Gibson's battalion) left the Ia Drang valley. The reality is that the 2nd Battallion moved in to relieve the 1st Battallion and then ran into a large NVA force at a place called Albany. The movie didn't even cover this more deadly battle.

The book tells the story from both sides from start to finish. The movie is basically one-sided in it's story. You learn very little about the NVA commanders, i.e. what they were thinking before the battle, during the battle and after the battle. The book gives detailed and accurate descriptions of the battle as told by the commanders themselves - on both sides.
