I have the LN46A550, and it's a wonderful television. The LN40A650 is a higher line - a higher contrast ratio, and it's 120hz. If you wanted that tv in 46", you'd get the LN46A650, and you'd pay about $600 more than the 550.

Yes, the 650 is higher contrast than the 550 models. It is visually much nicer! I'd love to get the LN46A650 for $1500 but right now about the cheapest I found it was $1800 or so. Still, that isn't bad for the quality of it.

On the 46" models, Amazon has the 550 and 650 series only $300 apart. I'd strongly consider that. On the retail price, they are $900 apart, and in that case the 550 is the much better value IMO.

would you guys recommend any of these TVs? Some are really reasonably priced, but im not sure if they are good.

Sony = Overpriced
Samsung 46A550 is a bit expensive.
Sharp is not great either.
The Toshiba is really nice and quite a bargain, though its a Fall 07 model, so not the newest, but not very old either.
The Vizio is well not the best brand IMO.
The Philips for 999 is a friggin steal, and anything lower than that isnt worth looking into.

So yeah, I would consider the Samsung, Toshiba or Philips from costco.

i saw the ln##650s and 750s at frys today, really nice tvs. The 40 seems a bit too small for our room, i think we definitely need at least a 46" tv. I decided that i will just buy my own (smaller) tv (30-37") and keep that. I'm prolly gonna go for one of the LN650s in a smaller size; we'll get a bigger one later for our living room i think.

Question...are there any downsides to getting a plasma (or even DLP...although i hear you need to change the bulbs which i dont know if it is true, but if so sucks) for our living room? They seem much cheaper for the size, and we most likely would never play video games on it, just watch movies.

Read this, and then come back with any questions you might have.
