We need a new system.

I personally am tired of hearing about the voting differences and difficulties in Florida and other states. I think that there needs to be some new regulations that span across every single state, without variance, so that in the future the rest of the country won't be waiting for a bunch of underachievers to get their totals together. If everyone has the same rules, we won't hear about how certain states cannot figure things out, and an election won't end up being decided by only one state. The ballots should be a clear ballot that every county uses without exceptions, and it should be clearly separated and marked in large lettering so all can see clearly. If we are such a powerful country, why can't we work as a country in deciding, not as separate confused entities?

Sorry for the rant, I'm just really annoyed at this point.

That would be great as long as it's all uniform and clearly understood by even the easily confused or hardest of seeing.

This will all go to electronic ballots sooner or later, so it seems like a waste to invest in some huge new system, nice as that would be. Also, don't forget that you can't force states to change their voting mechanisms (or the individual counties or precincts) - the federal government has no control over that process (which is a good thing).

While I agree in principle, you'll have to get past the US Constitution to do it.

There is another option: a standard system could be proposed and it would be up to the states to accept or reject it. If this system is affordable, fast, and accurate, then all the states would accept it unless they really ARE trying to sabotage elections :Q.

For a second there I thought you where talking about PCs' :p

I agree that we need a new system of voting. I think maybe a combination of an electronic/paper voting booth would be nice. The votes are registered electronicly and the machine would also punch the cards, but not without you double checking your vote. Sure my ideas has flaws, but its a start :)

I like the system we have. A paper ballot that you use an felt tip ink pen to draw a line for the candidate of your choice.

Bush/Cheny <----->

Gore/Liberman < >

When you put it in the counter it will immediatly check for double votes and signal and reject it. You can then get a new ballot and vote again. Even those Floridians should be able to handle that.

I think it is called the opti-scan system, not sure though.

I have the perfect solution. All the presidental wannabes in the country buy "president lottery tickets" and the proceeds can go to some good cause, then we can just draw the name out of a hat... We're almost guarenteed to have a better choice than either of those two jokers, those billions of dollars could go toward something useful, and we'd have a chance of a third-party president someday. :)

Russ, as if the US Constitution ever stood in the way of the US Congress. All they would have to do is threaten to withhold federal highway funds like they've done in the past. I'm sure they could contrive some connection between voting and "interstate commerce".
