We might have a chance to buy a 2003 Kia Sephia

From a coworker of my girlfriends.

I don't know how many miles it has on it. Girlfriend is going to find out more tomorrow.

One owner. Automatic.

We'd get to make payments on it, no interest.

For being a car guy, I sure don't know sh!t about them. Are they reliable or what? I mean, I know we all like to rag on them.....

How's the powertrain?

Current car: 1981 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup
Major Malfunction: 12MPG.

i wouldnt look for anything under the pedal, but my brother has one (for the past 2 yrs) and has no complaints.

his wife is a large one too, fwiw.

make sure the warranty is transferable, last I heard their supposed 10 year warranty does not transfer beyond the first owner.

I'm only even slightly considering it, because I know realitivly nothing about the long term reliability of Kia's and because of the "friendly payments" option.

If I had a 4k car loan or something, there's no way I'd even consider it.

Ouch. That would pretty much kill the deal ....

Stay away from Kia. Far....far.........far away.
😀

But, but but.. It's a 2003.

I'd like to think that it would be more reliable than the alternative; a late 80s import for around a grand.. lol

I suppose the payment terms must be the only good thing about it.

Figures. lol

If you want something of that price range and not too old, consider a Dodge Stratus, friend got one at an auction at a good price and so far it seems pretty reliable.

If you need a used car consider a 98-02 chevy prizm. Little known rebadge of the corolla, mechanically identical. It'll cost a bit more (I think ~6K), but worth looking into.

Yeah. Kias are cheap stuff. When a car dealership has a buy one get one on new cars... you know something about their quality. They have also had numerous deals to get the Sephias for about $5000 straight off the truck, no money down.

Basically put... they are a car. They'll do the job of a car, but you get what you pay for.

I opted for a 5 year old Sentra that was $500 more instead of a brand new Kia a few years ago when I had to get a new car. I don't regret that decision, because I doubt the Kia would have cost me less than the Sentra has in the 50,000 miles I've put on it. In the time I've had it, I have NEVER had to do any major repairs on it... I don't think I would see that from a Kia.

All in all... if you have a truck getting less than 15MPG... might be a decent investment. Depends on how much driving you do, really.

Do the math, calculate in insurance and such and figure that even in a year or two you would probably be lucky to get half of what you spent on it back.

Koreans do not drive Kias, they drive Hyundais/Toyotas/Hondas.

That tells you something. That, plus the fact it has a 10-year warranty on it. Why does a manufacturer need to warranty their product for ten years?

That's just a number that was thrown out, the coworker has to do some research, but said she would be fair.

Bleh, It sounds like I'd rather have a Honda or Toyota with 200,000 miles on it.

Just looking for a reliable automobile.

Wouldn't care if it was called "SH!T", as long as it's reliable.

Dont do it. When i worked for Enterprise Rent A Car the powers that be decided to try them out, and they were the worst cars ever. They were always in the shop for something, if you have to have a really cheap car get a hyundai accent - my wife has had one as a commute car since 2001, it has 75k miles on it and never broken down once.
