Hello,

My girlfriend and I are novice campers - well in fact, we haven't camped in a long time 😱 Anyway, We're doing a drive from California to Colorado in a couple weeks and we decided to camp the Grand Canyon. As practice, we're going to be camping and hiking Catalina Island (just off Los Angeles via boat) and then maybe the Santa Monica or Malibu Hills. But anyway, the trail we're taking in the Grand Canyon is 6.4 miles down; then about 4.5 miles up the next day, and another 4.5 miles up the last day. I just thought it would be a good idea to see if anyone here has any advice or stories to share. Thanks 🙂

Bring lots of water
Radios or walkie talkies (cell phone reception is non-existent)
Maps

Have a fun safe trip 🙂

Don't set any fires.

If you hear the sound of rushing water...RUN FOR THE HIGH GROUND!!!!! Flash floods are killer there...

Although it's been said, I'll say it again. Bring lots of extra water. It can be very difficult to find on the trip down (and up) the canyon wall, and it is a desert there.

Watch out for the Canyon's notorius lemurs. The black ones are friendly and help lost people, but the purple ones play nasty tricks.

Know how cold it gets at night. So many days of waking up early to thaw the water... and it wasn't even close to winter.
