If they arent doing something where they need to go fast or go through lights they should follow traffic laws just like everyone else.

Umm... if they have to follow the traffic laws when their on duty and called to an emergancy, how do you propose they catch up to those drunken/speeding drivers if they can't even speed up to get near them... much less intercept them...?

give them a medal.. increase their pay.. they don't deserve to break teh laws they are paid to enforce.. and no they dont put their life on teh line everyday.. the majority of cops never have to pull their gun

they're pretty much exempt here...from the ontario highway traffic act:

Fire department vehicles and police vehicles

(13) The speed limits prescribed under this section or any regulation or by-law passed under this section do not apply to,

(a) a fire department vehicle as defined in section 61 while proceeding to a fire or responding to, but not returning from, a fire alarm or other emergency call;

(b) a motor vehicle while used by a person in the lawful performance of his or her duties as a police officer; or

(c) an ambulance as defined in section 61 while responding to an emergency call or being used to transport a patient or injured person in an emergency situation.

I think he means when they are not doing any of those things, they should follow traffic laws. If they are just driving around, they should.

ya obviously thats the case when they can do taht.. but when the are just driv ing around cruisin... no reason to flip on their lights and fly down the street or go through lights .. or cut people off..

Hmm... Friday night. Me and 2 buddies are sitting in a wendy's right next to the window when we see this ambulance pull into the parking lot. Hmm... Someone call them or something? Maybe they're just getting something to eat. Anyway, the minivan just goes straight into the parking lot and stops across 3 parking spaces. A guy and a girl get out in uniform, go into the wendy's and gets something to eat.

Yea, thats freaken annoying how they do that. We accept it though. If i was in trouble, I'd want that amublance to easily get outa there too instead of having to do a 3 point turn.

Lol, where the hell do you live? Mayberry?

Many cops may not have to pull their gun and cap someone up in there, but the above statement is quite uninformed.

<< you are an idiot if you believe what you posted at the top. you have no idea where they are headed..... >>

I think he means if they turn their lights on, do the illegal manuever, then turn them off (like his original post said) with no obvious purpose (ie: they don't stop or pull someone over).

Obviously if hes headed somewhere urgent... he would keep the lights on... but i see this happening a lot. They're at a red light...long ass line in front... he flips his lights on... and everyone stops... goes to the opposing traffic lane and crosses the red light... and turns his light off... driving slowly. 😱

Many calls require police to NOT have lights and siren on. That doesn't mean they don't have to get there fast. They need to get through the light in a hurry.

How do you know if they haven't been told to keep lights and sirens off unless needed to get through an intersection?

You know.... they don't always have their lights on when they are going to a call. Or if they saw somebody going by in the opposite direction, but they just want to trail them a bit instead of pulling them over right away. Mack, stop making stupid, 16 year old "I own the road" comments. You obviously lack the intelligence to type correctly, don't insult the men and women who make sure you have a family to go home to every night. And If you still have a problem with cops, next time somebody is breaking into your house, call a plumber.

Those of you arguing that they may need to have their lights off to sneak up on someone or all calls don't require lights, I have this to say. First, if a call doesn't require them to use lights and drive fast, then they don't need to be breaking traffic laws to get to a cat in a tree call. Secondly, for the officer who wants to sneak up on someone, well that's okay, but from what i've seen, most of the time that is not the case, as many, many times i've been behind them right into a Dunkin Donuts or Burger King, right after they pulled one of those manuevers.

It's not legal to break traffic laws unless you are on a call, whether you want to admit it or not, and as a taxpaying citizen i'd want them to follow the laws just as they expect me to. Just because they protect me doesn't make them above the law, because they made the choice to become a cop, and that is not one of their benefits, like it or not.

I saw a cop the other day flip his lights on to pull out of a fast food restaurant parking lot to cross a 3-lane road that was packed with cars due to utility construction. As soon as he'd made his left turn, off went the lights.

I used to keep notes on when I'd see cops driving (with their family/friends) at speeds much higher than the posted limit. My best was when I tailed a county detective at 95 into another county (I figure if he's going that fast, I can too 🙂 )

They don't do crap to insure that!

The law is the law. Unless they are specifically exempted they should be held to the same standard as anyother motorists.

A lot of times when you see a cop speeding or whatever on a residential street, it is because he has been called to an emergency somewhere, and he doesn't feel the need to bother people with loud sirens when no one is in his way. When someone is in his way or drastic measures are necessary, i.e. the u-turn incident, they turn the lights/sirens on so people are aware, then turn them off so they aren't a nuisance.

Why would a cop want to get to dunkin donuts faster? That's like hurrying to buy yucky stale donuts.
Now if they were going to a Krispy Kreme when the hot light is on... I can see them being in a big hurry.

<< ignorance is bliss >>

It is very much the opposite.

If someone is ignorant and doesn't know that there are many important calls that require lights and sirens to be off then that causes pain.

If someone believes the truth(not ignorance) than they are fine with it.

If you don't think cops do this, you are ignorant, not the other way around. I have a lot of friends who are cops, and I've been on ride-alongs with one of my cop friends, and they do it. They aren't always going somewhere important, trust me. Yes, there are plenty of times when they have no lights on that they are really going to calls, but some do abuse it for other reasons.

They have rules and regulations to follow. "Doesn't feel the need?"!!!LOL!! He has procedures to follow which include obeying the Laws he has sworn to uphold. None of those rules and regs have a wit to do with how he feels!

If Cops want to be respected they should have to earn it. They should act like they are better drivers than the general public not be amoung the worst drivers on the road.

In most states if they excede the speed limit they MUST have lights and sirens going. This is for the safety of themselves and those around them. The safety of the public is their first and foremost duty. If they do not obey the laws that are in place to protect those they supposedly serve they have no business enforceing those same laws.

I'm sure the time the policeman used his cruiser to block a lane of traffic on a busy street so he could go the the ATM he was doing so only for public safety --- sameas the time the police cushman pulled up next to me and screamed at me for stopping for a pedestrian in a crosswalk (then he cut her off, somehow knowing that, if he didn't, a chain of events would transpire that would wreak world havoc sometime in the distant future). Of course, when they use the siren to get theough intersection, and then promptly turn off the siren immediately after they make it through, it is because they just got an urgent dispatch call while approaching the intersection that was then cancelled as they exited it seconds later. Happens all the time!
