Republicans caved over pennies. Good thing we'll never have to worry about them tackling the TRILLIONS left to cut.

Weather the people in congress want to or not, spending will be cut eventually, economics and mathematics has a way of catching up with you. No way to fight that.

Looks like they will be kicking the can down the road for a while longer at least. (even if the republicans got their way it would still be true).

We have a lot of unpleasant stuff to look forward to IMO.

I think Obama realizes there are going to have to be spending cuts down the road, once economy is out of the woods. But it's important for him to break the GOP shutdown now to take away their leverage, so that he can shape the terms of the budget cuts down the road.

I think Obama realized that no matter what the outcome was, shutdown or not, that he (not necessarily dems) will have an edge in terms of public perception in the end.

Gotta love the Boehner claimed new math, somehow 39 million in cuts this year means
39x10 equals 500.

Silly senseamp, why show a picture of the cowardly lion from the Wizard of OZ, when you should have instead shown a picture from the straw man from the Wizard of OZ who wonders if we only had a brain.

But that kinds of sums it up, no brains no courage. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

Meanwhile bring us the broomstick of the wicket which. Meanwhile beware of the winged monkeys.

To be honest I'm not happy either. Republicans massive tax cuts (dividends, capital gains, inheritance), bailouts, massive corporate subsidies, handouts to Pharma and the military industrial complex etc all need to be addressed and not by ripping off seniors who have already been looted of their 15% paid in their whole life. Our nations fiscal health depends on it. And I don't want my kids paying wealthy treasury holders for the rest of their lives and getting nothing back for their taxes. We were almost balanced with Clinton and these assholes are just fucking this country long term.

If we would go back to 1997 or 1998 real spending levels per capita today, the budget would be about balanced.

Well you can't do that because boy Bush gave Pharma right to charge whatever in medicare Part D (vs military which negotiates every drug at 48% retail). Started all these wars and other massive corporate handouts.

But putting capital gains back to 28% and dividends back to 1997 income rates instead of 15% would help a lot.

You're ignoring 13-14 years of inflation though, so it's an irrelevant point to make without that factored in.

I'm not actually, I said real spending per capita.

Adjusted for inflation and population growth, if we were spending at 1997 or 1998 levels, the budget would be almost balanced this year, even with our low tax revenue.

Go back to saner spending levels and raise some taxes if you want even.

You do realize that revenue is down right?

and taxes were higher for everyone right?

revenue per http://www.usgovernmentrevenue.com/ for 2011: 4460 billion
expenditures per http://www.usgovernmentspending.com: 2900 billion
inflation adjustment per http://www.westegg.com/inflation/infl.cgi: 3900 billion
us population 1998 http://www.npg.org/facts/us_historical_pops.htm 270,298,524

inflation adjusted spending per capita 1998: ~$14500
multiplied by current pop clock per US census: 4489 billion

seems he's right, if per capita spending were brought back to 1998 levels, we'd be breaking even.

What a unique turn of events. We're going to continue pissing away trillions of dollars that we don't have. Who could have seen that coming?
