Apparently, the bear came into the city sometime early this morning.

This is a rather rare occurrence for us. Last time I saw this happen, the bear was shot and killed by police.

The bear must have been protesting something.

Our son lives in a housing development in VA and last winter he was getting ready to walk his 2 daughters to the school bus when the 6 yr-old opened the front door, closed it quickly and stated. "I'm not going to school today." Son checked the front door video and there, six feet from the door was a bear. No bears or 6 yr-olds were harmed during the encounter. 😱

That's a little too much close-up nature for me.

We do have a fair amount of coyotes here, though. There are signs in our parks warning of being cautious as dusk approaches.

Bear in Erie Backyard Tree Removed, to Be Released Elsewhere

Makes you wonder where the "elsewhere" was?

Haha yeah we get them in town regularly here. There was a mother with cubs hanging out in the trails near the rich part of town. I often go walk there, ran into a bear there myself before. They look so cuddly!

We had one show up here last year in an alley very close to where I grew up. We are surrounded by woods though and plenty of black bear can be found once you travel out of town. I'm also hearing more about coyotes in our area also which is something I have yet to see.

I have a friend that (once had) a cabin in Tahoe, and he told a story about walking downstairs late one night for a snack, only to discover a fricking bear in their living room...a very small living room with a sliding door to the outside that was open at that time. ...much fear and much smashing of things, and much running in various directions occurred between two mammals that night.

I thought for a second it was this:

Than I realized I don't think they've expanded out of the US.

Wow I didn't know they were that big of a chain. There's several down her in the Phoenix area. We ate there once. It was ok I guess. Some asshole bought the last bear claw literally just moments before I was going to. That's pretty much all I remember.

Are you sure your friend didn't just watch some comedy movie? You can just picture it, the guy goes and opens the fridge and the bear starts nosing his butt. "Babe, I didn't know you were into that! Oh wow your nose is really wet, do you have a cold? Your beard is really chaffing my cheeks! Wait...you don't have a beard!" Then the guy and the bear turn and look at each other "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH, and then they both try to run past each other but bump into each other, then the guy runs and knocks himself out on a hanging pan, the bear shits all over the kitchen before running out the door. And his girlfriend the next morning comes down to find him unconscious, pants pulled down from the bear sniffing at him, maybe the bear busted a case of beer, so there's smashed beer cans all over and shit everywhere, and his girlfriend breaks up with him for being drunk.

We have lots of black bears here. This year our regular visitors and trash can diners are a solo yearling cub, and a momma and her 3 very cute cubs. We see one of these at least once a week as they roam the neighborhood (heavily wooded on the side of a mountain), and for the most part only make a mess if you leave your trash accessible.

These critters have adapted very well to urban life, and have developed skills like opening car doors. A number of videos have been posted of a bear opening a car door and checking for snacks inside, usually not a problem unless the door happens to close, then figure on your car being totaled.

Wildlife resources will typically not remove or relocate bears, they just tell you to don't have trash, dog food, bird feeders, where they can get to them, and to leave them be. They are just our neighbors. Now my dog will take exception to that, especially since he is a senior rescue that was a hunting dog in his previous life.

Two black bear-sightings in New Haven CT last week. (possibly the same bear seen twice)

Where I live however there are the Yale golf course and a bunch of wooded area so surprising but not shocking. Still not exactly bear-country.
