We have 2 racoons/possum in our house

Animal control put a trap in the basement with food. Should it be dark down there with no lights.

Right now the basement light is on. Should i turn the light so its pitch black???

UPDATE

One big opossum in the attic
1 baby in the basement.

I also found some attic insulation by the water heater.. right where the water pipes meet in the ceiling. Im 95% sure the baby fell out the attic straight to the basement. There is a hole on the main floor closet where you can see the pipe so im guessing its big enough for the baby to fall through and not the huge one.

Sadly, since its a opossum they can have more babies than a raccoon mother. 13 versus 3-4ish so we have to keep resetting the traps once/if we find anymore.

I have no idea, but I'm jealous that your animal control will actually respond to possum/raccoon calls. We're told to pay a private trapper or shoot them ourselves. 8-(

Well it cost us.. so maybe its not animal control, but a private trapper. We already fixed the entrace

Don't do anything to the light, just flip the switch and it will go dark. 😉

ok thanks guys. Lights off. We have 1 in the basement and 1 in the attic. Unless 1 is going from the basement and attic @ night time somehow.

Gotcha. In that case, jealousy subsiding. Now if that possum that keeps cornering my dog would just show up again so I can shoot it, I could put this whole thing behind me.

😀 be glad its not in your actual home. These things are loud during the night.. i guess we can treat them like nosey neighbors.. BE LOUD right back to them during the day while they sleep in our house. Noctural SOB's.

Actually I'm nocturnal more or less, so that part would work out ok. 😎

You can have them... I just heard the one in the attic, so i guess he just woke up for the day. =] Hopefully he walks into the trap with the bait soon

5' 1/2" pvc
wire coat hanger
2 liter bottle
paper

get your self a 1/2" pvc pipe and cut 5 feet out of it. youre almost done. get a empty 2 liter bottle. cut the top off, this will be your mouth piece. insert the bottle opening into your pvc and tape. get your wire coat hanger and try to cut as many 4" straight piece out of a coat hanger. make small half inch cones with the paper for your needles. insert needle into pipe, point at the racoon or possom, then blow to exterminate. profit.

update

Just heard 1 trap snap. so either it bumped it hard or it got trapped

If you hear a trap.. does that mean its most likely in there? Or can they out smart them like mice

I'd assume it's a live trap. That means, it's probably in there. Go take a look. If it's in there, take the trap outside. Grab a baseball bat. Open the door to the trap. The instant the critter steps out, kill it instantly with a blow to the head. Skin it, remove the guts and head. Slowly simmer in a pot with some carrots, potatoes, celery & a few other choice vegetables that you put into stew. Enjoy.

Yes its a live trap: http://www.havahart.com/resour...ducts/large/0745_l.jpg

LMFAO. Well the thing is we aren't sure which trap went off. I heard 1 metal cage snap.
Than 20 minute later i heard a BIG BOOM so i believe one hit the kitchen door. Its trapped in the kitchen/basement area.

Its kind of hard to tell. Maybe both snapped and the one we heard the metal snap was the basement one. Then the big boom was the one nearest to us in the attic.

Its hard to tell. Ill check in the morning when its done roaming.

Guess the critter knows about the dumbwaiter, and you don't, eh? 😉

Just remember that a trapped/cornered animal can be VERY dangerous! No need to get bit, call the exterminators and let them do the dirty work you paid them to do.

Update: There is a small racoon in the basement trap. Im not sure if i should release it and go reset the trap in the same place.

Im scared that since its small.. there might be another down there. I think they got separated though... they got in through the roof/attic and out through our damaged ceiling. So that is what i hope =[ .. the mother is in the ceiling and the kid is in the basement.

Edit: the animal control guy DRILLED the attic one down so i cant even touch that one. I want to release the small basement one far away tonight so i can re-arm the trap. however, im scared i might separate it from its family big t ime.

Your best bet is to trap them both, then take them for a long drive. Raccoons are bright animals, and if you take them outside the house, they may very well find their way back in. Drive them a few miles away. and let them go in a woods.

Im taking a 30 minute drive with it somewhere far away. Im just afraid i might split the family up since i cant get to whats trapped in the attic.

It'll be ok in the trap for awhile. Leave the one in basement in place, and see if you get anything in the attic trap over the next day or so. You could even feed and water the basement critter through the trap, but that shouldn't be necessary for 24 hours or so.

oh and why hasnt anybody quoted my home-made, death delivering blowgun?! unacceptable.

Blowguns aren't really effective weapons without poison. You'd need poison darts to kill the animals.

Im going to leave the traps alone. The animal guy is coming tomorrow morning. Im hoping he leaves the basement one another day.

in this scenario, we dont need poison. a 4 inch galvanized rod right to the brain, will only end in death. we arent hunting monkeys here.

when i moved from brooklyn to orlando, I had issues with a family of raccoons and 1 possum taking everything out the trash and throwing it all over my porch. thats when the war began, i tried holding down the lid with those bungee cords, and these smart mother fuckers would still manage to get into the trash. trapping and relocating was not an option. I built that satan inspired, blow gun and delivered a deadly blow to the alpha male in the raccoon pack. I took its body and hung it near the trash, to serve as a reminder to NOT fuck with my garbage. never seen any animals NEAR my shit again. peeing around the garbage also helps.

Wow, $65 to remove the trapped animals and reset another trap. These raccoons are costing us $$$
