Damian was 19. I knew him since the day he was born, and was there until two days before we put him down.

I go to school out of the country, so I haven't seen him much in the last two years, but I got to spend all of my Christmas break with him.

Early in the morning on the day I was supposed to leave I could tell he was just so weak. I knew something was wrong and knew it would be the last time I saw him. I laid down on the couch with him, gave him some cuddles, and said my goodbyes.

My mom drove me to the airport and I knew we were going to call the vet. When I called home two days later, my mom let me know that we had put him down. My mom and sister were with him, and he was purring and relaxed on the couch at home as the vet gave him the injection.

I'm heartbroken right now, but I'm glad that it was quick and painless, and that he didn't have to suffer. He was such a good little guy.

I hate losing animals. We have 3 cats in doors and a third a homeless main my excellent compatriot outside. The last animal we lost was a homeless kitty I named Goliath. He was as big as the main my excellent compatriot we have now. He had real pretty blue eyes. I buried him in the back yard along with our other cat Tiger. Losing the dog was hard for the whole family. It was like losing a family member.

So sorry for your loss. :(

It's good that you had that last time with Damian, and that they were able to do it at home.

Condolences.. but man, what if he was having a minor issue?

It was the opinion of the vet that it was the right thing to do. She felt that he likely had cancer. He lost a lot of weight in a short period of time (despite still eating a lot of food), he had a problem with constantly closing one eye (vet thought it was a tumor), and he had diabetes.

We had the option of taking him to the hospital to get a bunch of tests done, but I think we all knew that it was time. He was peaceful, and comforted by people that loved him in his last moments. It's all I could ask for.

Sorry for your loss

19 years is quite long, sign of a good life.

My condolences. I know what it's like to lose an animal that you've bonded with.

We had to put down a 13+ year old cat a few years ago...it broke my heart. He was my buddy.

I have one here who's almost 18 years old. When she finally goes, I'm gonna bawl like a 4 year old little girl.
We got her when she was 2 days old. I'm the only "momma" she's ever known...and she's my baby.

Sorry for your loss. Nothing but time will ease the pain somewhat, but I try to think about that saying about loss where you should be happy that you had him in your life.

My condolences. Nineteen years is a pretty good run for a cat. We've lost two at nineteen and twenty-three, but also two at seven and eleven. We've got three in the house, four outside that sometimes come into the house, and two more outside that want to come into the house but only get fed. If we rescue any more cats we're going to need rescuing!

Someone once said G-d invented the cat to give man the pleasure of stroking the tiger. Be glad you had your little tiger so long and remember the good times.

It never get easier to say goodbye to a loyal pet. :(

But he had a good, long life, and as loving and serene an ending as any of us can hope to have.

Sorry to hear that BigToque. Giving up a pet you've had many years (or all your life) is pretty brutal. Had a cat I got when I was eight years old and she lived until I was twenty-three. I went with mom to the vet when the cat was very ill. The vet said it was time to let her go, that she was too old and sick to make it. It was like someone punched me in the stomach. I walked straight out the door and sat in the car bawling like a baby. Felt like a jerk - my poor mom had to give the O.K. and then carry her out to the car. Just didn't want the staff to see a grown man crying like that. At least I did burying her.

A pet of that long of a time is rough as are most of any time... :'(
