My PS2 died this morning at 12:11am. It had a good life, had it since the day it was released (4 years?). It just had to fail right when I buy a new (used) game, and right before Christmas. Great, now my parents have another excuse to not buy me a 360, now they can get me a PS2... damnit. Not like I was going to get a 360 anyways, but now theres another excuse.

A few things are wrong with it, not just one thing: like the reset/eject buttons do not work anymore, it doesnt read disks of any kind (I thought about the class action law suite thing but thats over with if Im correct). It also started to smell after 4 minute of playing last night so I turned it off, took it apart, look at it, saw nothing wrong, turned it back on (case open) and pressed the reset button. The thing started to smell almost instantly and wouldnt show anything on screen.

Reason of death unkown, but might have been from dust, might have been from overuse, I left it on for ~1 month.

Pic of deceased

RIP PS2

You can always order a repair ribbon for the reset/power button and align the vertical positioning of the laser to have it read discs better. DId that to my v1 PS2 and it worked fine...

If it were only that easy, I have been doing that for the past few months every week because it would just plain stop reading any kind of disc. I was considering to buy a new ribbon thing, but it doesnt matter now, something is wrong internally. Also to add on that, The cd tray thing had its own problems, sometimes it would hit stop opening half way out, it wouldnt even open sometimes (ribbon thing i guess), it would also open but not close and by that I mean it refused to close (I couldnt push, w/o damaging it, in or have the button work).

I broke mine myself (when I tried to clean the laser) and it would not power on anymore. I sent it off to Sony (stating it would not read discs) they sent me back a brand new (refurbed) Ps2 with two new controllers and all new cables. Sony 4TW!

Mine that i got when it came out died earlier this year. It still works for movies, but refuses to play games, just gets a disk read error, so i went out and got a PS2 slim. The old one had a good life and im amazed at how long it lasted when it was left on for months and months if not a year + at a time for most of its life.

I ended up going through three of them. Amazing system, built like a POS.

Currently playing RE:4 on my fourth one.

I still have my modded PS2 I'm looking to get rid of. Friend is borrowing it for the time being, playing SC3 every now and then.

Wow, I'm surprized that people's PS2 are still going from launch. I'm on my second.

Any chance you can give width and size of the fan? Mine's loud, and I've been thinking of replacing it with a quieter one, but I want to know what type to buy before dissasembling the PS2.

PS2 is easy to unassemble, first take unplug everything and take the sticker off the back that says "if removed, warrenty is void". At this point make sure you have a 2 philips head screw drivers, one size 1, and the other must be extrememly small one (to clean laser and change its height). First remove the HDD bay thing, then remove all the rubber and plastic pads on the bottom of the PS2 and unscrew the screws. Then lift off the top and bottom of the PS2 and your done takin it appart. Careful of the restart/eject button thing so that its not damaged. Easy

I guess it could be a 70mm or 90mm but I dont know for sure. I doubt you could get a fan that would fit in the brackets either.

For all of you who still have the first model and still works, your lucky. I just started having problems a month or two ago, so your systems might have the same fate.
