We had a Thanksgiving eve car accident

We loaded up our 6 kids, the 2 dogs, the wife & myself along with all the stuff needed for a holiday visiting friends on Wednesday afternoon.
We didn't get far before the pre-holiday traffic caught us.
Slowly we made our way from home over a state highway about 30 miles out to the interstate (I-5) where the traffic was even worse.
After making our way over to the far left side things started speeding up, which was a shortlived relief.

Suddenly there was a large red truck stopped directly in front of us, I barely had time to get my foot on the brake before we slammed right into it. A car behind us did the same to our car about the same time.
The combined impact of both my car and the one behind us was mostly absorbed by the front of my Ford Aerostar van, it crumpled inward about 2 feet back pasting the radiator securely to the front of the engine.
We were all wearing seat belts, the dogs were on laps and were not injured.
Some of us have aches & pains, but no injuries and everyone in the other vehicles seemed fine - thats what they told the EMT's.

The airbag deployed in my face, that's a first for me. My eyeballs still hurt.
Our van is a total loss, I have no idea how the Wa State Patrol is going to affix fault (they said they would mail out all the information), we were insured for liability and medical but not comp as it was a '94 van - too old to justify comprehensive insurance.
The important thing is that no one was injured, and the other cars were able to drive away from the scene.

I brought along a new laptop I am setting up for a client, so I'm burning it in with Seti1 while away from home.
It's a Toshiba Satellite P4 2.8Ghz with HT, Nvidia graphics & Wide screen. (sweet) Seems to do an average of about 1.5hrs / WU

Our friends mobilized and came to our rescue so we had a nice Thanksgiving with them afterall.
Now we have to find a new vehicle, something with at least 8 seat belts. A Ford Expedition might be nice. 😉

It's great to hear everybody is alright! Sorry to hear about the van, but hopefully a nice newer vehical will come out of this.

Glad you hear everyone is ok.

I almost had an accident that night myself. I hit a patch of black ice while going 55 and swerved left and then right and so on a few times with traffic in the other lane!:Q Some how I managed to stay in my lane and the shoulder and got going staight again. Talk about lucky.

Sorry to hear Wiz but also glad you and yours are ok.

Holiday traffic is the worst imho.

And seattle/washington traffic too ugh

I hope you come out ahead in the long run (a new vehicle)

Baldy18 I too am glad you are ok, the roadfs are unforgiving and dangerous during the holidays,Please everyone drive safe during the holidays and slow down during the bad weather.reducing your speed by 1/3 can mean the difference between living and dying.

Mike

Glad to hear all of you are alright. I know how the traffic is on the highways during Holidays, drove 300 miles one way to visit the Kids in Illinois. Thankfully no one got hurt bad in your accidents.

Thanks guys, our friends drove us to the Ferry so we could ride across Puget Sound then another good friend with a Suburban came and drove us the rest of the way home.
I have a '77 Ranchero so we can get around - to the store etc... very handy at a time like this.

Hopefully I'll find out what the insurance company says on Monday, ideally I'll get the info from the Wa State Patrol in the mail by then. Hopefully they wont decide I'm totally at fault...

Glad to hear you're OK Baldy 😉

Wiz,

Your truly amazing!!

You get in a car accident, total your vehicle and while your recovering you install SETI on your new laptop?

Unbelieveable!!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Would any of you be thinking about SETI after getting into a car accident?

If I would have known sooner, I would have toasted a glass of wine to your dedication! 🙂

It's great to hear you were able to walk away from the entire event! We don't want to loose anyone else.

Hay Wiz, glad to hear that y'all are ok. A few bumps and aches are expected in a crash like that.
No matter about the van, it can be replaced. (You might want to talk to DanC about a new auto)

Again, glad you are all ok...

 for you, to relax!

Damn Rick ... I'm glad to hear no one was hurt but sorry about the damage to your vehicle.

The most dangerous place in the country is on the open highway. Hope things work out OK for you.

good to know u and family ok.
man accidents can happen anytime,anyplace.
we always have to be alert on the road.
i have seen a friend of mine, get killed in front of my eyes.it was horrible.🙁
take care.

You just described one of the main reasons I don't travel on Thanksgiving anymore!

It is good to hear everyone is okay!!!

Sorry about your accident. I had a little car stall (91 Lincoln Continental) on 294 in Chicago on Thursday coming home from my Mom's. Three car mishaps without a cell phone and I now have one 🙂. Each time that car has died on me I've been lucky enough to either break down near a rest stop, the middle of a busy intersection, or right in front of a broken-down semi that was being fixed by a guy with a cell phone. My luck sucks at the same time as being golden. For the time being I've sworn a thousand swears at the Ford Motor Company for their expensive to maintain bucket of problems.

definitely impressive, a true DC'er for sure! 😉

definitely glad to hear with such a load in the van that everyone is fine.. it was definitely lucky for sure!

sorry to here that wiz, sounds familiar, 3 years ago I ran into the back of a toyota avalon, after he ran into the back of a cadilac, I got stuck with the ticket since I was the last man to rear end someone, if your state is anything like texas you won't get the ticket.

Sorry about that Wiz! 🙁 ,glad your all ok.

Don't know what the score is with US Insurance but I had no problem getting fully comp on my dear old '92 Ford Sierra (which got rear ended 3mths ago & written off🙁)

Over here the last person in a multi shunt doesn't get the whole blame ,whoever hits a car in front gets the fault for that car ,even if he gets rammed up the rear causing him/her to hit the one in front. The idea is you claim off the guy behind etc.

Close one! head on's are nasty!

Man that's bad! 🙁

Thanks guys.

I got the ticket in the mail today, they are nailing me with "unsafe lane change".

I swear I don't remember changing lanes, but someone must have said that's what happened.
I admit that my memory of the incident is a bit sketchy, the airbag in the face effect must have caused a little memory glitch in my poor brain.

The driver of the car behind me was cited for "speed too fast".

This stuff isn't fun, I'm just reminding myself that at least no one was seriously injured.

Looks like I'm going to need to sell off some stuff to buy a new rig.

Anybody want to buy a Mitsubishi 4WD Diesel Compact Tractor with Front Loader and Bush Hog? (my baby)
