We currently have a peer-peer network. Trying to create a Windows Domain.

We currently have a peer to peer network.

Briefly:
ADSL connection to a Smoothwall (one of our DHCP servers)
3com 16port switch
Individual machine for myself, a colleague, a backup machine, colleague's notebook, 2 x network storage devices.

The whole idea behind a Windows domain is to have:
Server based logon authentication
'My Documents' hosted on the server
Local DNS (at the moment we have to manually log on to our network storage which is a problem)

I have installed (and it is running) Windows Server 2003 on a spare machine. I am looking for any online resources which can explain how to set this thing up! I have looked through the Windows help, but each process does not describe what it is doing to my network! I feel completely lost. Does anyone have any ideas as to where I can learn more (not the information aimed at the corporate sector - I have come across this already and it is useless to me)

Help!

follow the MS tutorials for stting up a domain untill you make the machines doamin members they will function quite happily as they are. a great book for win2k server is Mastering Windows 2000 server by Mark Minasi it will take you step by step through everything you need and more. alot of it applies to 2k3 they are fundamentlly the same a few tweaks here and there but it is by no means a huge differenece.

in fact hinking about if i were you id get a copy of win2k server and that book and then go silly learning it 2k3 is a bit new for lots of tutorials and docs to be floating around. and seeing as you have no clue what your doing ( no offence) then the new features of 2k3 will be lost on you.

i say READ 🙂
