Medical equpiment and instrumentation on planes are highly critical systems,
while they are engineered (i hope) to prevent stray emf noise on the lines
which can both give erroneous readings (not absolutely terrible) or render it
to a full stop (catastrophic), why tempt fate. I'm not sure in any concrete terms
what the field values are for cell phones at various ranges, there are a couple of considerations, the
initial radiation spike of an incomming call is huge, second you're transmitting to the
nearest tower which for a handheld device that size is no small feat. Given that
you can probably assume that your cell phone would cause interference with systems that
aren't properly designed, and we're talking about planes and hosiptals, I'd think that those
situations would warrant a little caution on the users part.

exactly. i only have one usable arm, its too loud to read, and they dont want you to fall asleep, texting will keep me awake and occupied, its not like i have to text, because i dont do it now when i donate, i just dont like being bored
Oh stfu newb. It takes, what, 15 minutes to give blood? Are you that impatient? No wonder people think the entire youth of America has ADD.

ok if you could read you would see that i am giving plasma
and it takes one hour and 30 minutes, so please unless YOU
know what you are talking about STFU
and dont crap on my thread the topic isnt about the use of cell phones
its about interference from cell phones with other electronic devices

It actually seems as if the thread is about someone complaining that they can't use their phone all the time. At least that's what I've gotten from it so far. Why bring up the subject otherwise?

So we can put a man on the moon but we cant prevent electronics from being disrupted by our cell phones. do you think they just say that so people wont use them because both these places are very personal and you are in close range of alot of people and they just dont want to be annoyed?

i was making a statement about not being able to use it, not complaining about using my cell phone
im saying that if we are so worried about planes and the electronics in it, we would prevent them from being disrupted by cell phones, BTW cell phones are more then just phones, there is more then just talking you can do with them, i wouldnt mind using those other functions while on a trip or whilepassing 90 minutes with a needle in me, i cant just turn the phone part off and use the rest or else i would

A quote from The Simpsons. It shows the stupidity of saying, "Why is it that we can... ...but we can't...".

It's costly and heavy to shield the equipment, and sending out interference signals would potentially cause the same problems they are afraid the phones will cause.

Gotta love the Sidekick - you can turn off the radio transceiver but still use all the other functions. :D

I think the real question should be, "Why did you want to talk on your cell phone while donating plasma?"

Christ, communication is important, but who were you going to call while you had a huge needle in your arm?

i am bored in there, and i would text

I love how fsking dependant people have become to their precious cell phones. I hate them. What did people EVER do without them when they were driving, or going to a movie?

oh stfu. it takes 45 minutes. if you cant wait that long you shouldn't donate anything to the society. killing yourself is the only way of doing good for you.

the folks around airports dont stop using their cellphones when a plane is landing - why is one inside the plane so much more dangerous than one just outside?

and why is the onboard $5 a minute sat phone any safer?

I've heard two reasons legitmate sounding reasons for why you can't use cell phones on planes

- When you're in the air, you have many more towers visible to you than if you were on the ground. This for some reason causes problems for the cell towers.

- Planes travel at several hundred miles per hour, so the towers would have to pass you off to the next tower ever couple of seconds. Again this causes problems for some reason.

I don't know the technical reasons for that. Personally though, I wish there were more places where you weren't allowed to use your cell phone, people have no freaking manners.

Those are considerations for the cell networks, the airlines dont give
a bollocks about that, they're concerned about their instruments. Why
is the sat phone safe, its been designed with the rest of the plane in mind,
rather than spreading a field willy nilly about space it's made to be restricted
and functional.

by the way, the reason for which it is hard to protect something from the mobile phones is the capacity of penetration the mobile phone signal have.

EDIT: By the way, if you don't want to feel guilty, don't use mobile phone near anyone with a pace maker

TDMA phones do that...my GSM phone does not.

GSM phones too, 100%.

It takes up to 90 minutes.
