We can get out of our Cingular contract at no charge..

We moved to NH this past October, and have a 2yr Cingular contract (expires this coming August). We couldn't get out of it without an early termination fee..but several days ago, our phones started showing "Off Network" -- we called Cingular..per their service rep, it's to remind us that it costs them more when we're off network - a reminder to use the phones less often if possible.

After dealing with terrible billing and service (overbilled $200+..they cut our service with no notice, after telling us we would have no interuptions..it took months to get it straightened out), I'm definitely not going out of my way to use the phone less -- actually makes me want to call make more calls..

Regardless..now that we can drop Cingular, we have a choice between Unicel, Verizon Wireless and US Cellular. Verizon doesn't officially cover our town, but they cover the next one over...does anyone here have Unicel or US Cellular? If so, how do you like them?

Cliffs:
Cingular wants us to use our phones less (we have over 3000 rollover minutes remaining.. )
US Cellular or Unicell - which to choose..

Goto Verizon's website and look up a coverage map for your area. Then decide if you want verizon, generally my verizon phones works anywhere except the absolute boondocks.

EDIT: when you goto verizon site for a coverage map, make sure you choose America's Choice after 2.21.05 as it's the most updated coverage map ATM

That's odd..it says there's coverage in Lancaster NH - nobody has service there (no towers). Hmm.

Find out who in the place that you live has phones and what their carrier is.

Make sure that you can get coverage where you will physically be; not just a general map.
Physical testing is the best way to verify - not a sales person word. Some may allow you to cancel out within a trial period; however, you may be charged fees during that period that will not be refundable.

I had that problem in Philadelphia a couple of years ago. Sprint had coverage shown; I could get coverage 1 mile away but not at the apartment complex I was in.

It turned out that no carrier could work within that section of the bowl; but because Sprint wanted me to "upgrade" my phone to work and it did not, I got 2-3 months free.

Overall I enjoyed my service with Verizon. No complaints at all. But the one thing that is most important is coverage area. If you can't get a good signal, it's just not worth it. The first company I ever used was Sprint, which I soon found out did not cover my area well at all. I'd get 1 bar at best. Eventually I cancelled it and had the early cancellation fee waived due to poor reception. I thanked them and moved on to Verizon. I have since moved to T-Mobile because they offered a phone I preferred, I don't much care for the generic phones Verizon has. That's really the only reason I switched. Plus I got $50 knocked off the price of the phone, which really tipped me over.

There's only one spot that I've seen in the state where I get no service whatsoever. I get VZW service just about everywhere and Extended Network everywhere else.

AFAIK VZW has the best coverage around here, and they're always expanding.

Edit to add some more:

I've never seen anyone with or heard of Unicel. My friend has US Cellular, she hates it, and she is _always_ on Roaming or Extended Network or whatever.

I use my phone primarily in the Durham / Nashua areas, but it works great all over southern NH, and it even works fine up north for skiing.

I'd say go talk to Verizon and ask if you could test out the service in your immediate area. I had a friend who did this, found he got no service, and was refunded 100% of his money. Also, ask if they have any plans to put up towers in your area. When I bought my phone, Durham was an Extended Network area but we were told a tower would be going up soon and sure enough, a few weeks later, I had VZW service.

🙂

Thanks 🙂

However, if "up north" refers to Lincoln, that's still way south from here. 😛

Nope. Lots of carriers nowadays don't charge for it, they take the hit themselves.

I've been to North Conway a few times and had no issues with my phone. Hell, even when I was up at Sunday River I still had service (albeit sparse).

🙂

North Conway is over 40 miles southeast of us.. 😛

I'll start looking for a Verizon deal - thanks all! 😀

Unicel sucks, used to be Cellular One. They're currently switching over to GSM, the same service that Cingular uses, and they have piss poor coverage. You'd have the best luck with Vzn.

You sure you didn't accidentally move to Canada?

Good thing you're not in Canada then.
