First off, this song kicks ass. On the radio, he says "recognize it, pimpin as we ride it", yet on iTunes, I found a version of the song where he says "legalize it, time to recognize it", and there's an extra verse or so that are about, well, smokin weed. There's no profanity in the song, has American gone too pvssy as to allow a song about legalizing weed to go up on the air and get sold on CDs (the album version on iTunes is censored too)?

On terrestrial radio, they usually bleep out or alter lyrics in songs that contain anything about smoking weed. It's just the way radio is. They've been doing this for at least 3 years now.

Believe it or not, there are people who spend their days listening to radio stations hoping they "slip up" so they can write to the FCC and get the station fined.

Its not just that, I thought Apple might have been precautious and decided to censor their version of the album too, but I just asked a friend that owns the album, its modified there too.
EDIT: Its a pretty tame song too.

Looking at Amazon.com, on the Sean Paul Album called "The Trinity" the first two songs are "We be burning - legalize it" and "We be burning - recognize it".

It's probably like the Black Eyed Peas and "Lets Get Retarded/It Started".

Depending on where your friend bought the album, it may have been a special version. Walmart is known to carry edited versions of music CDs that contain only "radio edits"

AllOfMP3.com also has it censored up, and Buy.com just has it listed as "We Be Burnin'" on the CD. Well, I'm not about to cough up 30 bucks to buy a Sean Paul CD 3 times, AllofMP3.com + iTunes for the ORIGINAL version will do.

And the track order on the Amazon.com listing is messed up.

That could be, I dunno. Most of the bands I listen to are pretty old :).

They've been doing this for much longer than that. The radio edits for Snoop Dogg's "Gin N Juice" have always removed "smokin' indo" from the chorus... and that's just one that comes to mind, from 1994.

Here they first started playing "legalise it" then they switched to the edited version and then went back to original. The original is waaaaaaay better IMO.

Here in NY they play it the way it's meant to be played, with "Legalize it.." as the lyrics.

I've heard f*** slip onto ClearChannel stations around here ALOT, yet weed is taboo, pshaw, some people need to grow up and learn to deal with weed and the people that want to legalize it (I'm not for or against it, I'm not a pothead, never had weed, and never hope to, but I really don't give a crap if its legalized).

Here in Tampa, I think I heard it ONCE on 93.3 with legalize it, but I guess they've changed it to the stupid "amended" version.

Who are you upset with? If the artist didn't want to do a modified version, there wouldn't be one. Obviously the artist feels there's more money to be made from a version that will get wider airplay and/or be carried by Wal-Mart.

The way I see it, the artist decided that the extra money made it worth doing. It's not like the radio stations and Wal-Mart are doing the editing themselves.

I'm upset with, well, the general public. I'm pretty sure SP wouldn't have changed the lyrics around if he didn't see the need to, a bunch of big babies at the record labels or at Wal-Mart or wherever must've not been happy with the original lyrics.

"if he didn't see the need to" = because he decided he wanted to sell more records.

Not a question of "need". You're making him out to be some kind of victim, when he clearly chose to do it for financial reasons.

I remember seeing the video for "Regulators" on MTV back when I was a teenager, and they censored this line:
"Sixteen in the clip and one in the hole, Nate Dogg is about to make some bodies turn ****"
They blanked out "cold"

Edits have become weird.

There's an Avril Lavigne song, titled Don't Tell Me that was edited as so: the original line goes "Don't think that your charm and the fact that your arm is now around my neck, Will get you in my pants I'll have to kick your ass and make you never forget". On MTV and local radio it was edited to say "will get (edited out), I'll have to kick your ass and make you never forget. Since when is in my pants worse than ass?

Another example is the Offspring song "Kid's Aren't Alright". The original line goes : "Mark still lives at home cause he's got no job, He just plays guitar and smokes a lot of pot"... The edit takes out "smokes alot of pot"...

Stupid editing. They should at least make sense when they do it.

Legaliiiiize it, time to recogniiiiize it.
The parts that were removed from the Radio Edit are gonna be my ringtone on my V600, and on my V635 if I ever buy that bastard, not just because this song kicks ass, but to spite anyone thats "sensitive" about marijuana.

Here in Socal we get to hear sublimes version of "Smoke two joints" on kroq all the time. They also play 'hash pipe', 'we are all on drugs, and 'dr greenthumb' uncensored. They also end their morning show with "don't bogart that joint my friend'.
