I have decidd to make an attempt to give up soda. I dont want to but its too many extra calories a day that my waistline is oh so pleasantly reminding me that I shouldn't have. Do diet sodas have any negatives? They have no calories of course but there has to be a difference healthwise between water and diet sodas. Who can help me out?

Also, what are the negatives (if any) of iced tea? That is a favorite soda alternative of mine but I want to make sure I'm not overloading myself of some other poison.

Dont' knwo about Tea, but diet supposedly uses a sugar substitute that makes the body absorb the stuff more readily (or something like that - I'm not quite fully conscious here). Drink water and juice.

If you excercise your body will demand water.

Tea has a grip of caffeine in it, which also is not a good alternative if your looking to slim down. You will get used to water, I did. Came to like it actually. Or get crystal light.

Sweetened Ice Tea will contain just about as much sugar as soda, so thats not going to help much.

Well its usually regular iced tea with 1 packet of sweet and low in it.

I always notice that juice has super high sugar levels. How is it different than soda?

I gave up soda last summer. (Since I'd started working, though, I picked up the habit again.....but I'm gonna get off of them again.) When I gave up soda, I drank just water. No soda at all. You'll get to where you'll just crave water and nothing else. It's really cool. I lost weight and I felt a lot better. If I drink soda now, though, I try to drink either caffeine free or diet caffeine free.

Just drink Diet Rite soda man, it has 0 of everything in it and still tastes good, sugar drinks are bad for you. Once I stopped drinking them about 3 years ago I never went back, you just dont care for them after a while. It'll take you a while to get over the sugar/caffiene fix, to make it roll over smoother eat a cut up apple with a slice of cheeze (kills the sugar craving really well while keeping you away from the chemical imbalance of bad simple carbs) when you feel you want soda and drink lots of water. Take 800mg of Ibuprofen once in the morning around 8am if possible, and once at night around 6pm. Should make things quite easy for you.

Dude welcome to the club. I have been completely soda free since last August, (this coming from a guy that used to drink atleast 3 12 ounces in a 3 hour time block while at work).

It's really not that hard...mostly when you go out to eat and you have to get lemonade or something.

I can't wait for finals week when my roomate and I are going back on 😀

yeh i wonder that too

I have been "soda free" for about 9 years. I do not drink regular POP (soda is for little girls BTW just so you know!) I drink all diet. The only negative is that the artificial sweeteners concern some people. Some have claimed it gives them a headache and others claim they are carconogenic. I don't know about all that - all I know is I drink 2-3 cans of diet pop a day and I'm a better man for it.

It also has caffeine which you may or may not want.

If you're cutting calories, avoid juice.

Tea has no calories until you add sugar to it, so if you stick with something like Equal it has no calories.

Honestly, though, unsweetened tea is quite good.

It does, however, have caffeine.

I've been soda free for 1 and 1/2 years now. I feel MUCH better.

I drink unsweetened Iced tea sometimes, cause I love it. But I have also gotten used to just drinking water. I buy gallon jugs of water and put them in my room, and just take swigs from them.

Well, the sugar is naturally occurring, not added. And it's not carbonated. And juice also has lots of enzymes and vitamins and other stuff that's good for you.

Yep it is better for you, but it is still calories so a person conscious of their calories should be aware that in terms of fat gain juice is really no better than regular coke.

Juice is better, even thou it is loaded with some sugar, it's natural, not processed. ok, depends on what kind of juice you're getting.

As for Soda (POP is for hicks 😀), try Diet AND caffine free variant.

Soda is what you drink if you're from San Francisco, like to drink Cafe Lattes, and play in the dark with other men.

Unsweetened caffeine free tea is probably pretty good for you.

Diet sodas have no calories, but they usually have sodium and whatever else. Also, there jury is still out on just how harmful or not those sugar substitutes are. You may be cutting calories, but you may be causing other problems in the long run. I try to drink as much water as possible. If I really want a soda, I reach for diet.

The sugars in juices tend to be "simple" sugars that are easily broken down by the body, not like corn syrup. As Skoorb points out, though, calories is calories.

LOL!

I wonder if drinking straight sugar cane juice would rot out the teeth?

I used to drink alot of soda (roughly 12/day). I quit soda entirely and dropped over 20lbs in a month.
I tried to drink diet soda, but can't get past the aftertaste. What I don't get is that I can make iced tea w/equal taste pretty decent, but with nutrasweet and soda, it tastes, well, kinda yucky.
Now I drink less than 1/2 can of soda a day, lots (up around 1 gallon) of water a day and occasionally tea. I drink juices as well. I will say this, even if you sweeten your tea (or even Kool-Aid) you can limit how much sugar is in it, which could be alot less than soda.

Unfortunate for me, I LOVE fountain sodas, which tend to be sweeter than bottled or canned. I have learned to restrain myself, and that's the important thing.

Was upto 4 pepsi's a day for a loooong time. Started cuttin it down gradually since last month and now i am down to 2-3 pepsi's a week.
BEWARE of some weird sh!t though. I picked up a 12 pack last weekend, got home opened the case and 10 of the 12 were all crumpled up and less than 1/2 of the pepsi was left in em.
Pepsi gods are angry :Q

i gave up pop about a month ago. I went to water instead. I was drinking roughly 2-3 20oz a day and just stopped for no real reason. I have lost a couple of pounds to boot!
