Nothing will happen unless there is a crisis. No company is going to encourage the reduction in oil usage out of the goodness of their own hearts (or to the eventual benefit of society).

I wonder when they will come up with a way to convert the oil on "pimple farmer's" face into usable fuel. Two birds with one stone eh? ;)

i dunno, I remember when I was a little kid in the 1980s, I read reports that oil would stop being cost effective to use in the ~2000 or so. I am still driving an gasoline powered car today and gas is still pretty cheap.

Worst case, if that scenario plays out, everyone will switch to nuclear.

"old" news.
Very true, and very real.

Though, most people shrug it off, like the majority on here.

By currently accepted math, if the rate of usage increase doesen't slow down, it should happen in my lifetime.

I'm 22.

It will be interesting, to say the least.

I wonder if this will make synthetic oils and synthetic gasoline mainstream. During WW2, supposedly germany was experimenting with production of synthetic petroleum products, even fuels. Sure it will be expensive, but atleast we'll still have petroleum products.

It wouldn't happen. Anyone with a basic idea of economics and pricing knows why.

As China then India develops an appetite for oil, anything can happen. Lots of folks live in those two countries :)

Russian oil fields are rich in reserve but poorly developed and managed. No country can out inept the Russians :D

China has a vast amount of coal. That is an out for them to develop lubes and fuel from.

I worked in the oil industry for 3 1/2 years. The word was Antarctica has oil that will rival the middle east but its covered by 1200' of ice. When the world is starving for oil the environmental guns will be disarmed.

My $.02 anyway.

Yeah, we have synthetic gasoline, the problem is price.

But if you couldn't get conventional gasoline at any price.........

Germany wasn't just experimenting with synthetic fuels, they were producing them in significant quantities. There was no other way to make up for the lack of supply. The synthetic fuels are made from coal. Germany had large coal reserves that could be easily mined.

The good news for the U.S. is that we have vast reserves of coal.

I don't think the doomsday prediction would come true. There would be decades of rising prices and lots of time to find economical alternatives. The possible financial gain for the company that finds a solution would be irresistible.

That why cars like the Daihatsu UFE-II concept should get more attention, they get 140 miles to the gallon! :Q

I think the US needs to raise mileage per gallon requirements, since I'm not car smart, if there isn't a mpg rule, for cars under $80k there should be so sports cars not used that much can still get their speed.

yes, it will be more expensive, a rough estimate out of my ass is about 5 times the current cost of gasoline, based on how much I see motor oil going for. Price will probably fall as economy of scale takes over. It will probably never be as cheap as conventional gasoline, but in 50 years, muscle car and SUV whores can still drive their to be classic cars at obscene prices. :D

It's just nice there is an alternative source. I hate these kinds of articles because they paint this doomsday, "end of civilization" scenarios that are basically bullsh*t. Sure it will suck when we have no more natural fossil fuels, but it's not like we're gonna go back to living in caves.

I thought that hydrogen fuel cell cars were supposed to hit the market in about 10 years? That should solve the bulk of the problem.
