We are going to embark on a trip of a lifetime...

L

Lola

We were given the oppertunity to take a 24 day cruise from LA that will end in New Zealand.

We will be sailing through the Hawaiian Islands, to American Samoa, Samoa, Crossing the Equator and Int'l dateline, Fiji, Bay of Isles, and spending 4 days at different ports in New Zealand....

I am still in shock at the places we are going...

BUT... i am curious, I am wanting to know some good info about New Zealand especially.
So, any ATer's on the other side of the world that could help, i would truly appricate it!

To be honest, I am most excited to see the "real" Middle Earth! (That is one of the tours that we can take  )

So, tell me all there is to know about New Zealand and what we cannot miss!!!
we are stopping at: Tauranga, Napier, Wellington and ending in Aukland.

I'm a Network Admin with a good boss. I have the time off (technically 18 work days). Plus, I will be buying an Internet package to work remotely and I have a Blackberry while we are on shore.

I'm also curious about this. This would be an awesome opportunity and I'd love to do something like this, esp since I'm a cruise lover.

Correct. That's the way I like it! :p

For whatever reason, Holland America sent an email with a special price to certain past cruisers. I happened to get one, though Lola did not.

Please add a page of the LOTR set on your site when you come back. I'm planning on something like this soon, got about 124 vacation hours saved.

I lived in NZ for 10 years, ask away.

As for what you can't miss - the outdoors more than anything in the city. Go to the beaches, go for a walk in the bush, see some geysers and volcanoes and snowy mountains, go kayaking, caving, bungee jumping, whatever you feel like. The clubbing in Auckland ain't bad either if you're into that, but y'know, you can go clubbing anywhere - although there is the advantage of going to sit on a warm beach in the morning after a long night out.

Sounds sort of what I'm going to be doing this summer... first to India for two weeks, then 4 months in Korea, while I'm there I'm planning on going to Japan, China, and Thailand for sure while I'm there, and then hopefully to Vietnam, Cambodia, Taiwan as well.

I work for family for an insurance company.
we both have the seniority to take this amount of time off and surprisingly understanding bosses (most of the time  ) The part we are most excited about (in a weird way) is that we will be the youngest travellers by far on this cruise.

We got this oppertunity from Holland America Line that we have been cruising with.
They sent us a crazy deal for airfare and stateroom on the cruise for less than what it would cost for a week in Hawaii (like we were planning to do in the first place).

Because we have sailed with them before, they sent out special deals to past cruisers. That is really it. Then, my travel agent beat Holland America's price and we had to jump at the chance.
The best part is there is airfare from Detroit! which never happens.
We are going this October so NZ will be a bit cooler but we are excited nonetheless.

We are going in Oct, so the weather looks a bit cool for beaches in NZ.

I'm a history buff. Any cool historical sites to wander around in?

I'll be in Auckland in late May, on part of my vacation. Visiting French Polynesia, Sydney, Tasmania, and then Auckland.
