We all know AOL sucks but...

I have AOL 5.0 installed on her Windows 2000 machine and I have her DSL modem connected through ethernet and was wondering, how come when I try to view a webpage (through aol browser), no pages will be displayed? I'm obviously having it connected through the TCP/IP protocol and it should most definately work and while aol runs fine, it's the damn web browsing through the client that won't work. I really wish I could have AOL 4.0 installed but it's windows 2000 and looks like I need a minimum of AOL 5.0 installed.

She called the aol tech guy and the guy made some bull sh!t about the DSL modem "not being able to hold a connection because it doesn't support DSL", but the thing is, ITS THROUGH ETHERNET NOT USB! and it's the equivalent of network lan since it's through ethernet. Any ideas? Shes addicted to AOL because she's been using it since '93 and it's like a drug for her... I wish I could get her off AOL but it looks like I can't, she even made some bull sh!t like "I wanna die if I can't have my aol" it's like WTF!???

Try upgrading to AOL 7/8/9 Ive had to put up with it whenever i go home and ive used AOL's 6 through 9. The modern ones crash less and might solve your problem. Unless theres some reason your still on AOL 5.....

I have her on 5 because the later the version of aol you install, the more shit/spyware it installs. No, she did have AOL for Broadband but got her off that god for saken internet and put her on SBC DSL. I have her account setup so it's $9.99 a month and for her to use aol on top as a client. From aol 3.0 and up, it has supported just using TCP/IP over any internet instead of dialing up. I wish she could use 4.0 but I guess I can't it's really a pain in the ass to have to use a newer version. Once I get this working, in a year from now I will make her computer stop working and have her call me over, then I will remove aol and show her the computer is working, saying that the reason why the computer stopped working was because of aol...

Give her AOL 8.0. That's what my parents use over TCP/IP and there isn't a lot of bloat. Who cares if there is bloat though. It's HER COMPUTER.

Good point. Another good point, wasn't AOL 5 the one that wouldn't uninstall?

And I thought the only way to use AOL on a broadband connection is by using their broadband service, if only for the browser. It's like $15 a month though, which is a complete waste of money.

Does she know she can access her email and use AIM without using AOL? And everything else in AOL is worthless?
