i just want to add that yes, America is the greatest country in the world. not only are we the bread basket of the world we are one of the most compassionate countries out there.

flame away on that one. you won't change my mind.

Words may not change your mind, but I'd certainly hope that travel would. America is certainly more compassionate than a number of other countries, but they are far from the top. Great country? Yeah. The best? Naw... Most influencial? Perhaps.
The US is Rome. There may have been corners of the world that were better to live in back in those days, but Rome was still on everyone's tongue. It's such a huge subject that different people tend to focus on vastly different things (Rome was both glorious and decadent), and one could argue that no one is capable of seeing the full picture of such an empire. We just build out own simplistic constructs out of our experiences and feelings on the matter. Some focus on economy, some on justice, some on politics, some on nature, some on society, and different people get different impressions of the relative good and bad of each of these.

If you were to take a million different people, give them some sort of mythical Genesis device, and have them each construct the US from scratch, as accurately as possible (not 'the way they want it to be", that is), I think that few of us would recognize the countries that came out. But the sum of all those concepts might be a pretty close representation.

You do realize how like a pointy headed quasi communist liberal you sound like when you say these things? If you dont like it, change it, or move to Cuba. Pretty please?!

I'm sorry, I apologize for actually thinking and attempting to understand the world, rather than building up a Playskool understanding of things and then getting emotional whenever anyone attacks it. Please point out the place where I said I hated America. You won't find it. I'm just not naive enough to think that it has no flaws. Change it? Oh, I try, but I'm only one person, and it's not like there are *that* many changes that need to be made.

I don't entirely understand where "communist" comes from, though:confused:

Dont try to understand anything. You dont need to too. Youre American. We fix our problems by throwing money at them. Let the rest of world point out our flaws and compare us to Rome just before the fall. Its a popular thing to do in North Korea, China and Cuba. But theyre communists, so I could care less. :D

The United States *was* the greatest country in the world... Or, if it still is, it's rapidly losing ground to other countries. Our educational system has a lot of problem; in math and science, quite frankly, we suck compared to other industrialized countries. We're concentrating more and more of our wealth into fewer and fewer hands.

Yeah, we might still be #1, but not for long unless a few things change.

Oh, and while we may have the greatest universities in the world, take a look at the majority of students receiving their PhD's in science and math in U.S. universities. Hint: they also take "english as a second language."

Depends on what area.

Best state/government = Ireland
Best climate = Monaco
Best women = Netherlands/Sweden
Best party = Spain
Best all around = US/Canada :)

Your statement includes a possible/probable fallacy, therefore the question is unanswerable. I would put Ireland extremely high on any list of my top nations however.

It is extremely disputable about America being the greatest country

Some other candidates:

- Switzerland
- Finland
- England
- etc

Yes and people who dispute it dont live here and are extremely jealous about. So they risk their lives to get here just to start complaining again.

I'm not going to say that the US is the greatest country in the world, because in many ways it is not. But you bring up a good point, especially since z0mb13 is a foreigner here on a work visa.

z0mb13, why did you come here instead of to those other countries?

IMO saying the US the GREATEST country is just plain ignorant and self centered. I agree US is one of the greatest countries in the world, but certainly not the greatest. I have listed countries that can be considered among the greatest countries in the world (of course I have missed a few like Japan, Australia, etc)

There were multiple reasons why I worked here:
- I am currently working here because I went to college here. US has one of the best college educations in the world.
- Great work opportunities
- Personal reasons such as: my brother was here, so I chose to go to the US instead of going to UK or Australia

That's cool. Enjoy your stay! Stop in should you come to Maine.

Mugs, some more of my views about the US

Pros:
- One of the best economy and financial institutions in the world, highly flexible and transparent and robust
- Has the best colleges in the world (even though starting to see more issues)
- Best work opportunities, career advancements, etc
- Best medical care if you can afford it
- ability to chase the "american dream"
- etc

Drawbacks
- cost of living is fairly high (but you make more so it kind of makes up for it)
- more and more issues in education, especially public education
- politics issues such as the iraq war, budget deficit, how more and more we are turning into extreme ideologism (sp?)
- american dream is harder and harder to get, both parents have to work to be able to buy a house
- hard to start a business with all of the regulations (fire code, labor issues, etc)
- retarded immigration policies
- etc

Of course these are my views, I might be biased ;)

Love it or go back home. I hate immigrants legal or otherwise that come here to bitch. Stfu or gtfo imho.

Heh. Shut it there, jackson.

Well, we don't all know the US is the greatest country in the world, because in some peoples opinions it's not. :p

Yeah, commies and islamofascists! ;)

islamonazifacists!

Actually, if you poke around you will see that the "Islamists" America has come to know are the religious radicals. Similiar to the religious radicals we have in country who don't count for much of the population.

So most people who worship Islam aren't that bad at all, average Joes and Janes just like you and me.

lol MSM brainwashed you well.

Wow. Wow... so you're saying that most Muslims ARE bad people? That's one of the most fvcked up things I've ever seen you say.

can you quote where I say that most Muslims are bad people?

You bolded a statement that said "So most people who worship Islam aren't that bad at all, average Joes and Janes just like you and me."

You replied with "lol MSM brainwashed you well."

Clearly you disagreed with the statement that you bolded.

So apparantly you believe that most Muslims are bad.

I was commenting more on the "average Joes and Janes just like you and me" part. They are not average Joes like us. First off, they (Muslims in the Middle East) see anyone that is non-Muslim as dirty/second class, and they see Jews as evil and think they make passover matzahs out of children's blood. They hail as heroes those who strap bombs and blow up jews in cafes. They see terrorists as martyrs.

Public polls say most Middle East Muslims don't believe Muslims committed 9/11 terrorist acts -- most of them think Israel did it!

But most of all, they are part of the infrastructure/economy/society that supports terrorism -- and they don't renounce it.
Wrong forum.

pretty much yea, most good people are bad muslims. just the way it works. most are born into it with no choice and ignore or don't care about much of it. doesn't validate islam in any way. most nazi's didn't go home and beat their children after all.

as for foreign counties in second place. japan? germany? sweden/norway..they have oil riches or something. don't think western countries that spend very little on their defences count though, since they are effectively having their defence subsidized by the us

What's the criteria that goes into determining the "greatest country"

Flags plastered everywhere, in every classroom, indoctrinating kids, making them practically pray to the flag, over-enthusiastic flag waving every time the president makes an appearance, jingoistic speeches from the leader more about building an almost hysterical level of nationalism such that every member of the country swears blindly that their country is 'the greatest' despite this being a fallacy.

But yeah, reallly... the US truly is "the greatest"

The true criterion of what determines the best country is the numbers of people from elsewhere who desire to move to said country. By that standard alone, it would seem that the US rules. Any other argument is invalidated.

Um. Australia is renowned for its multiculturalism.

Calling us racist? If you are from the USA, those are big words from a person whose country took Africans and used them as slaves. :disgust:

I like Japan. One of the only countries left that has managed to blend the old with the new. A -bit- too ruthless when it comes to business, though. But parts of the country look so fvcking beautiful it's impossible NOT to want to go.

Canada: Well, I'm biased, because I am Canadian. Sure we have our problems. But all I had to see was the sun rising over Lake Ontario today, and it made me happy to live in this country *sniff*
